Dowel + Spring = ? #woodworking

When installing hinges or other hardware, if the pilot hole is slightly off-center, the screw can pull the hardware out of position as it is tightened. That is why self-centering drill bits are used to drill pilot holes directly in the center of mounting holes. I own several sizes myself, but you need the right size to match the holes in the hardware. So this time, I wondered if I could make a simpler version myself using a wooden dowel and a spring. The result worked better than I expected. It centered itself properly and drilled the pilot holes exactly where needed. Of course, a wooden dowel is not ideal in terms of durability, but with a different material, I think this idea could be practical enough for regular use.

That’s a clever little mechanism. How did you work out the spring dimensions so it moves smoothly without binding?
