PATRICE LUMUMBA: LIFE AND ASSASSINATION 🔥♟️👏 Patrice Lumumba was born on 2 July 1925 in Onalua, Belgian Congo and belonged to the Tetela ethnic group. He worked as a postal clerk and beer salesman and was largely self-educated. In 1958, he founded the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC), advocating unity and independence for Congo. He was arrested in 1959 after riots but later released. Congo gained independence from Belgium on 30 June 1960 and Lumumba became Prime Minister while Joseph Kasa-Vubu became President. On independence day, Lumumba condemned colonial exploitation, straining relations with Belgium and Western countries. Shortly after, the Congo faced an army mutiny and the secession of Katanga under Moïse Tshombe. The United Nations deployed peacekeepers but refused to intervene militarily. During the Cold War, Lumumba sought Soviet assistance, alarming the United States and Belgium. On 5 September 1960, Kasa-Vubu dismissed Lumumba and both leaders attempted to dismiss each other. Colonel Joseph Mobutu launched a coup on 14 September, suspending parliament and placing Lumumba under house arrest. He attempted to escape to Stanleyville in November 1960 but was captured, transferred to Katanga and assassinated by firing squad on 17 January 1961. His body was later dissolved to conceal evidence. Belgian and CIA involvement in his death was later confirmed and his assassination caused international outrage. He was 35 years old at the time of his death.

On this day in 1925, Congo’s🇨🇩 independence leader and pan-African hero Patrice Lumumba was born. He gained prominence as a charismatic and vocal advocate for independence from Belgian colonial rule, which led to his involvement in the Congolese National Movement (MNC). Upon Congo's independence in June 1960, Lumumba was appointed as the country’s first Prime Minister. He faced immediate crises, thanks to neocolonial meddling in the country, including a mutiny within the army and the secession of the mineral-rich province of Katanga, orchestrated and backed by Belgium, the country which tortured Congo under colonialism for many years. His appeal for Soviet aid to quash the Belgium-backed secessionist movement led to Western leaders immediately beginning to plot against Lumumba. His rule would end in tragedy, when he was captured in Lodi by the troops of coup leader Joseph-Désiré Mobutu. The coup was backed by the US and Belgium, with US President Eisenhower ordering the CIA to ‘eliminate’ Patrice Lumumba. For daring to oppose Belgian colonialism and US domination of Congo’s natural resources, Lumumba was executed by firing squad on the 17th of January 1961 after being tortured. Before being killed, the colonial conspirators tried to force Lumumba to eat the paper on which his Independence Day speech was written on. After being executed, his body was dissolved in acid. Lumumba still remains an icon of pan-Africanism to this day, with his image and memory being a rallying point for Africans across the continent against neocolonialism.
