Here’s the real reason behind the decline… Why bother learning to spell when spellcheck fixes it instantly? Why master math when a calculator does it faster? Why struggle to write a paper when AI can generate one in seconds? Why read a full book when a 60-second video summarizes it? Why study history when someone will just tell you what to believe? Are you getting it yet? Figured it out? Every time we outsource thinking to a machine, we quietly make ourselves a little less capable. Use the tools, but never let them replace the hard work that actually builds the brain.

Schools have to go back to books, paper and pencils! Kids can't spell half the words because computers auto correct their spelling and they get lazy with using their brain to spell the words correct.

100% believe this.. My daughter was tested for the gate program. She was not allowed to be on computers at home & that year they only allowed computer testing. She bombed the test. I fought the district for a paper test. Passed w/92% computers are the problem!

As a mom of 2 Gen Z’s (a Freshman and a Jr), I thought I was the ONLY one dealing with this?!. Our problems start and end with digital. Mine were (are) addicted to computer games. You try to restrict/ prevent usage but most hw assignments are online. It’s like putting heroin in an addict’s face and saying ‘don’t touch it’, just do your work’. Covid triggered the massive slide. At least they saw school attendance and grades as important prior to 2020 but afterwards, bah. They didn’t have to attend nor do assignments to pass. Can teachers just… teach? And assign hw from the textbook?

The earlier parents give screens to kids, the dumber they will be for life.

I have teenage daughters and they're the only ones in their classes that don't have cell phones or tablets. Maybe coincidentally, they're the only ones without anxiety and all the other mental illnesses that are so common now.

My kids were home schooled, they woke up late, they finished their books my wife wouldn't close the books until they were actually done, so they learned, they gone to earn their degree in Biotechnology double husky, Northeastern university two of them and one a engineer

I saw it start in 1973, everything in the high school curriculum was thrown out. Home Ec., Shop, Music, Chemistry, Physics, Sociology, Psychology was going out the door, History, Civics, and Short hand writing class. Gone !

I'm not a full time teacher but I sub at the hs almost every day and also have 2 kids- 1 at that hs and the other in college. I can absolutely attest to everything he's saying. The students are like robots and all their work is on Chromebooks and takes 10 minutes. We need change!

PARENTS DONT PARENTS ANYMORE. My child has a tablet but all the apps on there are educational apps. It has a screen time lock and I can see how long my child is on the tablet for. It’s not the devices it’s the PARENTS

I’ll tell you what happened the smart phone came out right around that time. I know the iPhone was 2008 for the iPhone 3G with the App Store and that’s what changed everything. It was all downhill for education and it’s not getting any better unless we take the phones away from kids and get back to our roots.

Sweden has just returned to using paper textbooks and analog learning tools. It will be interesting to see how this will affect their learning abilities.

Smart phones came out in 2007 and became widely affordable through contraxt deals in 2010. Couple that with the explosion of social media and tberes your problem. Its only gotten worse with short form content. Good luck giving these kids a book in class.
