African Journalism cannot afford to be lazy or driven by external narratives. If claims are being made about Tanzania, Tanzanian journalists must be the ones asking the hardest questions, verifying the facts, and telling the world what is really happening on the ground. Dr. Maponga challenged journalists to look beyond party politics and understand Tanzania’s strategic place in regional and global power struggles. Tanzania sits at the center of trade routes, ports, railways, minerals, and competing global interests. So when violence, instability, and misinformation spread, journalists must ask: who benefits? Joshua Maponga: Africans Are Educated To Serve, Not To Solve For a continent producing millions of university graduates every year, Africa has a serious unemployment problem. This problem can be traced to a colonial education system imposed on the continent centuries ago which was never intended to uplift or “civilize” its people, but make them easier to exploit. When the European colonizer “left” Africa in the Decade of Independence, he left his colonial education system behind, in the care of his puppets. And it is this system which has robbed generation after generation of African youth of the social, intellectual and spiritual fortitude to nurture, develop and reap the fruits of their own Motherland. In this 2023 interview, Zimbabwean author and vocal Pan-Africanist Joshua Maponga comments on Africa’s colonial educational system, how it has compelled so many Africans to associate the idea of a bright future with literally anywhere except where they were born, and what should be done about it. With over 64 million new students expected in Africa by 2034, the need for a new, pro-African educational system has never been more urgent.

Foreign Interference: Tanzania Blocks European Parliamentary Team From Visiting Country In November 2022, China revamped its fabled Belt and Road Initiative – a win-win development initiative aimed at the Global South – in Tanzania. In December 2022, Tanzania signed a historic $2.2 billion railway deal with China to link the East African country’s port city, Dar es Salaam, to its neighbors, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda, as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Many other deals would follow, each with the potential to transform Tanzania and the wider continent, economically and politically, for the better. But there was one problem. An African nation was suddenly fast-tracking its development, without the blessing of the West. And so the West did what it did best. It funded an “opposition” movement in Tanzania, and deployed its media parrots to promote the members of this “opposition” as “defenders of human rights and democracy” fighting against a “repressive” government, and sensationalize this government’s necessary actions to thwart the attempted color revolution that would follow. And even after this failed regime change plot, the West continues to do everything in its power to destroy Tanzania.

Over 2 decades of trade between Africa and the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has come to an end, but did Africa gain anything from it? For so many years what Africa called an opportunity and the US tagged a partnership AGOA, only trapped Africa further in a cycle of dependency and cheap natural resource exports. Far from being a loss to Africa, the end of AGOA is an opportunity to rewrite the continent's economics story on its own terms, and in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCTA) lies an opportunity to do so in a manner that would be transformational. The time has come for Africa to use its own resources and population to enrich itself, rather than tie itself up in Western dependency masked as "bilateral trade agreements."

Maponga Marara calls on young people to trace their African roots and free themselves from mental slavery, echoing the words of Bob Marley. He argues that once the mind, what he terms the “software”, is transformed, there is an automatic rejection of the indoctrination imposed by Western education. To illustrate, he shows how even knowledge acquired within the Western system, such as pharmacy, can be repurposed: boiling leaves, filtering them, distilling the essence, and extracting the finest nutrients: even packaging the result. He recalls witnessing this synthesis in China, where two forms of medicine exist side by side: on one hand, colonial, white, synthetic medicine; on the other, traditional indigenous medicine. He further observes that while Kenya develops its infrastructure, it is becoming increasingly European in its architecture, losing African character in the very act of mirroring London. In this, Maponga issues an anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, and Pan-Africanist call to reclaim knowledge, identity, and self-determination.

Africa’s Borders Make No Sense – Joshua Maponga Between 1884 and 1885, Africa was divided along arbitrary, meaningless lines, whose sole purpose was to distribute its natural resources between its European invaders. Led by German colonial criminal Otto von Bismark, the Berlin Conference split the continent of Africa between the then major Western powers of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Portugal. Each European nation got to plunder its “share” of Africa with impunity, and treat the rightful inhabitants of the land as it saw fit. Imposed by these parasites and enforced by their local puppets, these arbitrary borders continue to divide Africa today, hampering trade and movement, fueling conflict, and keeping the world’s wealthiest continent in perpetual poverty – all the better for its historical plunderers. In this travel video, Zimbabwean author, educator and Pan-Africanist Joshua Maponga exposes the absurdity of these borders, and speaks to the urgency with which they must be dissolved.
