Today’s Case Update of Dr. Mahrang Baloch and other BYC leadership Today, the Anti-Terrorism Court extended the police remand of Dr. Mahrang Baloch, head of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, and her associates for another 20 days. This decision is a blatant violation of fundamental principles of law and justice, raising serious concerns about the independence of Pakistan’s judiciary, which continues to yield to state and military pressure instead of upholding constitutional rights. Despite the absence of credible evidence, Dr. Mahrang Baloch and her colleagues remain unlawfully detained on baseless terrorism charges for peacefully advocating for human rights. The judiciary’s repeated extensions of their remand underscore its complicity in state oppression and the worsening human rights crisis in Balochistan. At the 61st Session of the UN Human Rights Council, Dr. Sabiha Baloch, the central leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, raised her voice for the people of Balochistan, the largest province of Pakistan by area, the epicenter of foreign projects, and the most brutalized region in terms of human rights violations. She exposed the relentless campaign of enforced disappearances where not a single day passes without a Baloch individual being forcibly disappeared by the Pakistani state. She condemned the systematic target killing and body dumping of Baloch individuals as deliberate state policy. She made clear: those who dare to speak, journalists, students, lawyers, and human rights defenders face harassment, arrest, and prosecution under counterterrorism laws. Several BYC leaders, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch, have been detained for nearly a year and silenced for demanding nothing but justice. At last, Dr. Sabiha called upon the United Nations to conduct an independent assessment of the human rights situation in Balochistan.

In March, I submitted a video statement for the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council, which is now available on UN Web TV: Despite international attention, including statements by UN Special Rapporteurs, the Pakistani state continues its campaign of oppression against the Baloch people. Our peaceful struggle for justice and human rights has been met with increased brutality. Today, more than 200 of our fellow activists, including prominent leaders such as Dr. Mahrang Baloch, Shahji Baloch, and Beebarg Baloch, are being held in illegal detention. We urge all international human rights organizations and the global community to continue raising their voices against these grave injustices. The lives of human rights defenders in Balochistan are at severe risk. Your solidarity and advocacy are vital in the struggle to uphold human dignity and justice for the Baloch people.
