There are lots of explanations. Take away the wings and dragons look like lizards. The dragon in St George is apparently a crocodile. Dinosaur fossils would have also fueled images of something real.

I can actually imagine that in the past, people discovered dinosaur remains and came up with dragons lore. It’s very possible. It’s also possible way back that people seen a survivor and told stories about it. Or saw cave paintings. The thing is, parents do this, people who want to influence others or control their behavior; they make up stories to put a little fear in others. That way they are easily controlled. Mom and dad don’t want the kids to go far from home, so they tell the kids of the misters in the woods. In my case, the basement. lol.

But dragons/leviathans are mostly know as harbingers of destruction and end times for the civilizations currently in power across many to most both ancient and religious texts spanning the known world. Yet we as humans find at least the idea of them awe inspiring.
