He did it for one reason. The guards were preparing him for a propaganda broadcast. Stockdale was the highest ranking U.S. Navy officer captured during the Vietnam War. Sh*t down on September 9, 1965, while flying an A-4 Skyhawk over North Vietnam, he had already been beaten and interrogated at Hoa Lo Prison, later known as the "Hanoi Hilton." When he learned the North Vietnamese planned to parade him on television as proof that American pilots were being treated well, he made a decision. He would make himself unusable. Using the stool and a razor, he cut and battered his face until it was swollen and bloody. When guards arrived, the image they wanted was gone. The broadcast was canceled. The act set the tone for the next seven and a half years. Stockdale became the senior officer among American prisoners, organizing a covert command structure inside the prison system. Using a tap code based on a 5x5 letter grid, prisoners communicated through walls, sharing orders, intelligence, and morale messages even under isolation. The cost was severe. Stockdale spent more than four years in solitary confinement and endured repeated torture, including rope bindings that dislocated shoulders and damaged nerves. 🏥 NEW: Israel points to broken European Hospital as it prepares to clear Gaza City hospitals Israeli Army Radio and the Times of Israel reported Saturday that the European Hospital in Khan Younis will serve as the replacement for all Gaza City hospitals as the army moves to seize the city — but Gaza’s Health Ministry says the facility is devastated and nowhere near ready to operate. In May this year, the hospital was hit by a heavy Israeli airstrike targeting a tunnel beneath the compound. The attack killed at least 28 people, caused massive damage to the facility (including roads and infrastructure), and led to the evacuation of its remaining patients. The Times of Israel described medical staff cleaning and clearing the compound today, after the IDF finally allowed access, and cited Israeli officials who said the UN and international aid groups are drawing up plans to restart the hospital “as an additional medical response” for the estimated one million Palestinians expected to be forcibly displaced. But Gaza’s Ministry of Health rejected that narrative, saying an initial assessment found massive damage to sewage, water, electricity, and oxygen systems, as well as to buildings and medical equipment. It warned that even if resources were provided immediately, it would take at least two months and $1.3 million just to restart the hospital at a minimal level, and six more months and another $3 million for full operation. The ministry stressed it will not evacuate any hospitals in Gaza governorate and renewed its demand for protection of health facilities and staff. Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza’s al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, told Al-Araby TV that if Israel invades Gaza City, “we will face a new massacre,” warning that more than 2,000 patients remain trapped in city hospitals with nowhere safe to go.

It’s hard to believe we're on the final day of our campaign to save the farm and keep our special Esther Magic in Campbellville with Operation Angels. In just two short months, we've raised over half a million dollars to help bring this dream to life. Although we haven't hit our goal yet, what we've achieved is incredible. With over 6,100 contributors from 39 countries totaling over $560,000, this is a global affair in typical Esther fashion. This project is designed to generate revenue to support sanctuaries and rescue organizations and serve as a model for revenue-generating programs at existing facilities. What sets us apart is our approach to drawing revenue from a new demographic to ease the pressure on current donors and an educational program to better equip animal organizations for the challenges they face. This project represents everything Esther stood for: kindness, compassion, inclusion, and support. I can't think of a better way to honor her and the community of like-minded people who make our little corner of the internet unique. The campaign will remain active until 4 am ET on August 1st, so we have less than 17 hours to give it our best and finish strong.
