so incredible!! there’s a darker area between the highlight and the shadow on the hands that is really striking. is that a stylistic choice or an irl property of lighting? its gorgeous!

As I understand, its an exaggerated version of irl lighting! It's call the core shadow. When an object is turning away from light, there is a spot where light not longer directly hits the object but bounced light struggles to hit! It's one of my favorite things to draw.

Your values layer looks fantastic :o How do u blend it in with the colour layer? Mine always end up looking muddy when i try to separate both :(

Certly profil fotoğrafı
Certly1 yıl önce

Every grey is on a different layer, so after I'm done shading, I alpha lock each layer and paint in the new colors. This allows me to get my shadow shapes right first, then test colors to see what works.

i love ittt, questionnnnn, do you place a flat color shadow layer then erase it afterwards where light is? i really need to try that instead of drawing shadows on top of a light color

Certly profil fotoğrafı
Certly1 yıl önce

Yeah! I’ll put a clipping mask over my flats layer, then erase out where the light hits. It also forces you to resolve most parts of the drawing, where ask painting in shadows you can skip a lot. Sucks for doing simple stuff tho. Takes too long.

How do you properly add color over grays? When I try it, it just looks washed out. :(

rendering excelence aside im amazed by the lettering. any secrets to the neatness

I used the text tool for the text, then treated it as part of the sketch layer. Giving it line art and treating it as part of the the drawing helps it blend in more.

Shading first and then coloring, hmm what a strategy, if i can figure out how to cleanly change an entire color like that, (paint bucket is too messy and inconsistent) i might have to try that
