It’s interesting how Japan moved away from filmmaking. Hong Kong really took the mantle in the 80s/90s for me with Wong Kar and Woo. You still see their penchant for good film making in their anime though.

yes, Japanese cinema was more stronger and have global effect in the 50&60 and i think they moved away to anime because it's cheaper to produce than live-action films. Even Perfect Days was directed by a German filmmaker, Japan still has great actors, but I can't think of

any modern Japanese director with the same global impact as Akira Kurosawa
