The Curiosity rover broke free from the "captivity" it had found itself in just a few days earlier – on April 25th, after drilling into a rock, it literally "stuck" to the drill bit and refused to release. Instead of breaking apart during the drilling, the rock was pulled out of the surface in one piece and remained hanging on the drill bit as the robotic arm began to lift. And it wasn't just a small fragment. NASA estimates the rock was about half a meter wide, about 15 cm thick, and weighed about 13 kg. At first, the scientists tried to dislodge it by vibrating the drill, hoping the rock would shake off on its own. This didn't work. A few days later, they repositioned the robotic arm and turned on the vibration again. Sand fell off the rock, but it remained attached. Then, on May 1st, the engineers used a more aggressive sequence of actions: they tilted the drill bit more sharply, began rotating it, and simultaneously increased the vibration. It worked – on the first try, the stone finally broke loose, fell onto the surface of Mars and split.

NEW: Drilling contractor accidentally punched a hole in the Queens Midtown Tunnel causing water from the East River to spew into the tunnel. The incident forced officials to close the tunnel for nearly an hour. According to MTA CEO Janno Lieber, a private contractor was "drilling to find pylons for the East River greenway" when the incident happened. "We determined it was a drilling contractor who drilled about a 2.5-inch hole through the cast iron liner," said the president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels Cathy Sheridan.

Is Static Drilling the Kata of Jiu Jitsu? I have never done Kata, so I do not have a strong opinion on its value. It does look boring to me, though. Static drilling has some value, but not as much as live drills using the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA). If someone shows me a new move or solution, I will statically drill it 2 or 3 times. Then I will try to incorporate it in some live training. Static drilling makes up less than 1% of my training now. CLA will build your grappling skills faster and is a lot more fun.

The region’s reservoirs and underground water sources are not enough to meet the needs of the population, in part due to the extensive network of coal mines. When the self-proclaimed “DPR” and “LPR” were created in 2014, Ukraine did not cut off this water channel, as it was still supplying water to Mariupol, which remained under Ukrainian control. But at the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the situation changed: the Russian army, during its offensive, destroyed a unique hydraulic structure that had supplied the region’s largest cities with water. The Russian authorities decided to build a new canal - the Don–Donbas canal - which was supposed to begin in the Rostov-on-Don area. It soon became clear that the new water pipeline, first of all, could not provide the region with the necessary amount of water, and second, it was built with numerous violations, with a large portion of the budget embezzled during construction.
