#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is adding new cutting-edge technologies to help keep the city safe. The new tools enhance frontline officer awareness, strengthen accountability, and build on the Departmentโ€™s mission to protect public safety while balancing the privacy of both the community and VPD officers. In the air, VPD is the first police agency in Canada to deploy Skydio X10 drones for a Drone as First Responder Program. After extensive testing, six of the remote-piloted drone systems will be deployed. The drones have already been in testing for several weeks and are fully approved by Transport Canada. โ€œThe potential of the Skydio drone systems in our work is impressive for many reasons, not least of which is they will be able to link with our body-worn cameras,โ€ said Inspector Wade Rodrigue, with the VPDโ€™s Force Options Training Section. โ€œFor example, if an officer is in trouble, perhaps being assaulted, they can tap their camera three times which will automatically deploy a Skydio drone to their exact location at the direction of the pilot in command. Pilots can also fly the drones to a crime in progress, arrive first, and send their video feeds to responding officers on the ground as well as the Operations Command Center (OCC). That gives us better intel on whatโ€™s happening and can help responding officers to pursue suspects who may try and evade them.โ€ The VPD will continue to adhere to its posted policyand procedures as well as those prescribed by Transport Canada and Nav Canada with respect to the operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) assets. The weatherproof Skydio drone launch/landing pods are installed on rooftops at strategic locations throughout Vancouver, including the VPDโ€™s Tactical Training Centre. The drones will only record video when that function is activated by a pilot, and only when appropriate as per policy. Body-worn cameras are also expanding in function. The Axon body cameras used by VPD now have the ability to translate language in real time with Axon Assistant, allowing officers to understand at the push of a button whatever is being said to them in over 50 languages, and to have their reply translated into the language recognized as being spoken. Real-Time Translation adds to VPDโ€™s current translation offerings and will be used when a quick translation is needed. โ€œWhen you consider how multicultural Vancouver is, this translation ability is a game-changer,โ€ said Sergeant Dermot Oโ€™Boyle. โ€œWe want to be able to help everyone in our city, including those who may not be fluent in English. Being able to understand what theyโ€™re telling us is a critical first step to getting them the help they need.โ€ Body-worn camera footage can also now be live-streamed to the VPDโ€™s Operations Command Centre so personnel there can see what the officer is seeing and dispatch additional resources as needed. This can be done at the officerโ€™s request or based on the priority of the call when an urgent situation is developing. In addition, Axonโ€™s real-time operations platform, Fusus, improves visibility and coordination across responding units and partner agencies by enabling Operations Centre personnel to view RPAS and body-worn camera video according to pre-determined operating protocols. Other new tools entering service include: โžก๏ธ 73 Fleet 3 in-car video systems with automated license plate recognition cameras (ALPR) across the VPD fleet, helping officers spot vehicles of interest faster which are already proving effective, with one ALPR-equipped cruiser flagging 22 uninsured vehicles in just three hours โžก๏ธ Holsters for conducted energy weapons and service weapons that automatically activate body-worn cameras when drawn, capturing critical moments right away โ€œCombined, these technologies create a system that helps improve decision-making, response times, and overall public safety in Vancouver,โ€ said Kevin Bernardin, Superintendent of Innovation and Technology at the VPD. All are designed with responsible AI and data use at their core, with safeguards for secure data handling, controlled access, and auditability. The AI does not make decisions about an individual, rather it gives the VPD the ability to respond more appropriately to emerging situations. Data is managed in alignment with local governance requirements, helping ensure it remains protected and under appropriate jurisdictional control, while giving VPD confidence that sensitive information is handled in accordance with British Columbia privacy standards. #VPD Drone Policy:

Today, Ukrainian city of Kherson is being hit daily by hundreds of Russian drones. A year ago, the region was attacked by about 700 drones per month; now, that number has risen to 2,700 in a week. In August alone, Russians carried out almost 10,000 drone strikes across Kherson region. The Dnipro district of Kherson lies in the "red zone", closest to the front line. In the Korabel neighborhood, not a single apartment block remains undamaged by strikes. Safety is relative: drones can reach any part of the city. โ–ช๏ธ Everyday life in war Living next to the enemy has forced Kherson residents to adopt "survival rules": checking Telegram channels for alerts before leaving home; walking only under trees or along walls; watching both the sky and the ground to avoid mines. When driving, windows stay open to hear the buzzing of drones. Some residents install drone detectors that can warn of FPVs and sometimes even display an intercepted image from the droneโ€™s camera. The most terrifying thing is to see your own car on that screen. Itโ€™s dangerous not only to step outside, but even to go out on a balcony. Evenings are spent in darkness: turning on the lights could draw attention, and Russians might send a drone straight through the window. Kherson residents call whatโ€™s happening a human safari. The city is not a "frontline city" - it is entirely the front line. โ–ช๏ธ "Every drone should be treated as if you are its target" In Kherson, this is no exaggeration but harsh reality. A group of people is a more tempting target than a lone passerby. A car is a more significant target than a pedestrian. But in truth, any target may be attacked - even the least "interesting" one. Sometimes it happens simply because a drone is running low on battery, and its Russian operator decides to kill someone before it crashes. Kherson has become a testing ground for their maneuvers. The main goal is to make civilian life unbearable, to force people to flee. Today, about 60,000 residents remain in the city. Before the full-scale invasion, there were 330,000. And yet, bakeries, cafรฉs, and even theaters still operate in Kherson. Local businesses often work at a loss, but people keep showing up for shifts - for many, itโ€™s a way to preserve the cityโ€™s life and to feel needed. Despite mortal danger, bus and trolleybus drivers continue to run their routes. Alongside electricians, emergency workers, and rescuers, they have become true heroes for the residents. Anti-drone nets have only recently begun to be installed, covering key transport arteries. But it is nearly impossible to shield every street. The main protection comes from electronic warfare systems, which jam four out of five drones. Today, Kherson is a vivid illustration of what any city can turn into once the so-called "Russian world" draws near. But it is also an example of true resilience - when life, despite everything, again and again seeks to overcome death. ๐Ÿ“น: US journalist in Ukraine Zarina Zabrisky Zarina Zabrisky ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ / Voice of America Source: Ukrainska Pravda

My dear friends and followers, I have an important and somewhat unusual fundraiser to announce. It's very important, and I am asking for your help to spread the word and donate. Please read a small interview from Ukrainian commanders and the details below. The donation link is in the end. After consulting with my friends from the Ukrainian 92nd Assault, 26th, and 47th Artillery Brigades, I have decided to shift my fundraising goals toward engineering equipment, specifically excavators. Why are small excavators so important for the infantry? I spoke with an infantry battalion commander from one of the assault brigades to better understand this. Please read quotes from him: โ–ถ๏ธ "Our brigade has one or two PZM2 trenchers, and they are always either broken or in use. We lack the manpower to build proper fortifications, and the infantry often ends up not digging deep and long enough trenches because they are exhausted from endless combat and shelling. I can't afford to have them in a trench for six days and then digging another trench for six more days; they need to rest." โ–ถ๏ธ I asked if they would be able to dig the fortifications when enemy FPVs fly by: "Now is the perfect time for that, because of the greenery, we can relatively safely build trenches inside the treelines 2-5 km away from the frontline. If we have a small 2-8 ton excavator, it can discreetly operate inside the treeline without breaking all the trees. Itโ€™s mobile and easy to use. Yes, we will have a risk of delivering it quickly enough to the treeline and back, but I'd rather risk it driving in the open for 15 minutes than having my infantry stuck in knee-deep trenches without proper ceiling layering with three layers of logs." โ–ถ๏ธ "They save the lives of our infantry. If you carefully examine the latest videos, you can see that the only thing between the infantry and the enemy FPV is the fortifications." โ–ถ๏ธ "No, we wonโ€™t use the excavator on the front line; we will use them to build fallback positions, positions for drone operators, and for the command posts." So I've spoken about the infantry, but why does artillery need them? To better understand this, I spoke with one of the artillery brigade commander's deputies. Please read his comments: โ–ถ๏ธ "Letโ€™s not start the blame game; itโ€™s just the reality. We only have one excavator based on a Kraz for digging, and itโ€™s always under repairs or maintenance." โ–ถ๏ธ"Remember how many videos there were of our machines struck by lancets? Well, you see less now. We are taking measures, and those measures work. With properly built fortifications, itโ€™s only a direct hit from a 152mm shell or a missile that can destroy the howitzer." "With excavators, we hide our equipment deep, we build separate ammo storage, and we build a bunker for the crew." โ–ถ๏ธ"How long do you think it takes to dig a fortification to conceal a Krab with shovels? At least two weeks, and while the crew is building it, it canโ€™t operate. If you think thatโ€™s not enough reason, I will give you another one: we had crew members injuring themselves while digging, breaking bones, two people got injured at the same time. This affected howitzer operations; you canโ€™t properly operate it if you have two people missing." โ–ถ๏ธ"With an excavator that you gave us, it takes us only two days and requires three times fewer people to build a Krab shelter, two ammo storages, and a bunker for the crew." As you can see, the engineering equipment is highly needed, so this month I want to set an ambitious goal to acquire three excavators, get funds for repairs, and build protective cages for Bohdana howitzers against FPVs. We already have two 5-ton excavators waiting to be repaired in Kharkiv, so our total goal is below: โœ… 3 x 5-ton Yanmar Vio50/55 excavators: $90,000 โœ… Repair parts for 5 mini excavators, 4 Yanmar and 1 Hyundai: $20,000 โœ… Repair parts and services for a 55-ton crane to support burning shipping containers for command posts for the 59th Brigade: $11,000 โœ…Protective cages for Bohdana howitzers: $24,000 We are setting up a repair and maintenance shop in Kharkiv right now, and your aid is very much needed. Without you, we canโ€™t do it. I know this seems like a huge and ambitious goal, and I am not sure if we can meet it. But together, we have already saved millions of dollars of equipment. Donation Link: All donations are tax deductible, via us registered non-profit Liberty Ukraine Foundation ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Slava Ukraini! I will post updates and more videos about our work repairing and maintaining these crucial tools.
