It’s not Rio but the Favela Rocinha, Rio is seen behind. The student accommodation was at the base of the Rocinha and as a young tourist I spent a few nights there. Tourists can enter the Favela but only in controlled areas.

That's not "Rio". However, it is the largest favela (slum) in Rio. Wrong perspective....

The thing about favelas is that if you live in one and you want to send your child to a good school or you try to interview for a good job, it's almost impossible. How they maintain their joy against such odds is a testament to their resilience.

This is what poverty looks like.
