My next book - a journey through child development from prenatal to age three - will be called Wonderment…and for good reason. There’s not a lot that arouses awe in us as adults. After a point we’ve mostly seen it all. We’ve been there and done that. But there once was a time that each day held pure magic as the world revealed itself to us for the first time. New sights, sounds, tastes… Which leads us to this little one, shared to IG by mahrooniaziii, who looks on in wonderment at her very first sight of snowfall. What do you think she’s thinking? What a treat to experience the world anew through the eyes of our children.

They never have anyone to tell them. ACHILLES TOLD HIM. Sure, it hurts to hear the truth, many times. The only people who make their mark in this world, who do great things...are those who can overcome their fear. The boy is being honest. He's seen the warrior that Achilles is about to fight. He tells the truth. "I wouldnt' want to fight him." It seems cold and distant, what Achilles says to him in response: "That is why no one will remember your name." You can be safe. Or you can be great. We don't live in a world where you can be both. Do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be great? Do you want the glory? I think a big mistake is believing that if something is here, we should be able to see it. Right? The lights in the sky and the pilots or the gods or whatever they are? I think we assume out of arrogance and ego. An insect can crawl across your hand and never understand that you are a whole entire being. It only experiences pressure, heat, vibration, and movement. A fingertip appears. A shadow passes. The insect never sees the body attached to it. The insect does not have access to the full image. Ever. I think our situation may be exactly the same. Whatever people call the phenomenon, nonhuman intelligence, gods, or something else entirely, may be present in full while we only register a portion of it. We notice effects, not the actual being. Changes in perception. Anomalies. We expect a face when all we are capable of sensing is the fingertip. Let me explain. Reports are always partial and strange. Lights, shapes, impressions, symbols, missing time, pressure, fear, calm. None of it ever shows us a full being, or the real craft; because our senses are not built to assemble it. Just like the ant cannot assemble a human from a few sensations. Now that doesn't mean what we are seeing is fake. It means the insect’s world is smaller than the thing interacting with it. I get sick of people saying there is no there there, I think they are making the same mistake the insect would make. Our reality is likely a thin slice of what actually exists. We move through a world full of forces and intelligences that exceed our resolution. We are not seeing nothing. We are seeing effects. On a romantic road trip with my partner Giada, we stopped in Târgu Jiu to admire Constantin Brâncuși’s beautiful monuments. Poarta Sărutului is considered a romantic spot to kiss, so we wanted to capture the moment in a photo. These are the two kisses we shared next to the monument. A police officer approached us, saying we should respect the monument and not kiss in front of it. We asked if it was because we are both women. She said not personally, but that there are many cameras broadcasting throughout Europe, and if same-sex people kiss near these monuments, people will think that we, as Romania, support gay marriage. While I respect her right to have an opinion, I never thought before that something as simple as a kiss could be seen as a national statement. So there it is. We made that statement by kissing in front of all the Brâncuși monuments. Because yes, there are Romanians who support civil partnerships. There are Romanians who support gay marriage. There are Romanians who believe love should not have to hide in order to be considered respectful. And there are LGBTQ+ Romanians who need to be seen, protected, and recognised; not treated as something that must be kept away from cameras, monuments, or public life. If you believe in equality in rights, please share this. Let the world see that Romania is not only represented by fear and outdated prejudice. Lesson. If you are going to protest, find a way other than concreting/gluing your hands to the road. A lot of this is happening in Germany this week. If you think that some Americans are extreme when it comes to trying to protect our planet then you really need to travel to Europe. With the world recently seeing some of the hottest days on record perhaps they are onto something. I’m of the mindset that humans are too selfish to make major change and we will likely have to rely on new AI-driven technologies to figure out wide scale carbon capture. Thoughts?
