You know who is at fault ? Valid FASTag but no physical sticker on the car, Stopped at Toll and asked to pay cash A motorist has raised concerns over toll plaza practices after being denied passage despite having a valid FASTag and annual pass linked to his vehicle number. In a video shared online, the man explains that although his FASTag account was active and his vehicle number was correctly registered with a valid annual pass, he was stopped at the toll because he had not yet received the physical FASTag sticker from the bank. According to him, bank officials had already informed him that there is a standard processing time for delivering the sticker. However, toll operators allegedly refused to allow his vehicle to pass and insisted that he make a payment via UPI or cash. Questioning the logic, the motorist said, “Is FASTag meant for the car or just the sticker? My vehicle number clearly has a valid FASTag and an annual pass.” He further clarified that the car was purchased second-hand, and applying for a new FASTag naturally involves a waiting period. Despite this, he questioned why he was not permitted to pass when his vehicle details were already updated and valid in the system. The motorist also highlighted the costs involved, stating that FASTag and annual passes are not free services. “I paid ₹3,070 for the annual pass, ₹100 as FASTag processing charges, and ₹200 as a security deposit. Yet, we are treated as if we are asking for something free,” he said. Rule Clarification (NPCI / FASTag Guidelines): As per guidelines issued by the National Payments Corporation of India, FASTag operates on RFID technology where the physical tag (sticker) affixed on the vehicle’s windshield is essential for automatic scanning at toll plazas. The FASTag system works through RFID readers installed at toll gates, which scan the sticker to deduct toll automatically. Even if a FASTag account is active and linked to the vehicle number, the absence of a physical RFID tag means the system cannot detect or authenticate the vehicle. In such cases, toll operators are allowed to treat the vehicle as “non-FASTag” and may charge cash toll (sometimes double the fee, as per rules). Karnataka State Police S.
