As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, I recently held a hearing on the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program—a program designed to help Native communities thrive. This isn’t about DEI; it’s Congress fulfilling its constitutional duties and federal trust responsibility to Native peoples. Native entity-owned 8(a) participants reinvest their earnings in their communities—in line with their communities’ needs—practicing economic self-determination and building stronger futures for generations to come. Congress intentionally structured the 8(a) program to ensure these businesses are accountable to their communities while keeping the program transparent and effective. This was the right call—both for Native communities, and for their partners in the federal government.

"There's nothing more American than PBS. As a membership organization, our local service is at the heart of our work. Our job at PBS is to support our stations so that local stations can serve their communities. We've been proudly fulfilling our mission for nearly 60 years using the public airwaves and other technologies to help educate, engage and inspire the American people. That mission is our guide star and remains just as important today as when the Public Broadcasting Act was signed into law in 1967," Kerger said. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., the committee chair, has accused NPR and PBS of bias. PBS, NPR and their respective local stations are funded in part by a $535 million appropriation provided by Congress through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, in addition to substantial foundation, corporate and viewer donation support.

A glimpse from my recent address to a congregation of Indian association and industrialists in Jinja and from across Uganda we were gathered to felicitate me and Hon Sanjay Tanna. On every platform where I engage the Bayindi community, I continue to advocate for stronger relationships with our host communities, built on mutual respect, harmony, and shared prosperity. I also encourage our community to see Uganda as home to reinvest here, create opportunities, and contribute to the country’s continued growth and development. I will continue championing a Bayindi community that lives amicably with fellow Ugandans, gives back to the communities that have embraced us, and plays an active role in building a stronger Uganda.

As Secretary of HHS, I worked hand in hand with community health centers to help deliver COVID-19 vaccines, and I saw firsthand the vital role they play by providing preventive care, primary care, and other essential health services. During National Health Center Week, I'm proud to celebrate these clinics and the dedicated health care workers who keep our communities healthy.

The briefing brought together Tribal leaders, Native youth, Commissioners, advocates, and partners from across the country, highlighting broad support of the bill and its eight titles, and urging Congress to support the lasting change it seeks to achieve. Quyana to everyone who took part in this meaningful event. Your leadership and stories continue to remind us that culture heals, Tribal self-determination strengthens communities, and Native children and families must remain a top priority. Introducing the bill was an important milestone, but our work is just beginning. Together, let’s get this legislation signed into law.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced today that it will be closing down by the end of the year following the passage of a rescissions package earlier this month. My team and I are still figuring out what this announcement will mean for Alaska Public Media, but rest assured that I will not back down when it comes to public broadcasting. When I return home this month, I will spend time with public broadcasters across the state to assess their needs and chart a path forward. The programming and emergency alerts these stations provide to communities throughout Alaska are vital, and I won’t give up until they receive the support they need.
