Firefighter Matthew Cappola began his career with the FDNY as an EMT in 2009. In 2013, he was promoted to Firefighter, assigned to Engine 332. His uncle, Lieutenant James Blackmore worked at that same firehouse. Blackmore died in the 1998 fatal fire at 2530 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Our elite, world-renowned rescue companies are recognized globally for their ability to respond quickly and operate efficiently in any emergency situation in our city. Tuesday, members of Rescue Company 4 in Queens, along with Squad 288, Engine 291, and Ladder 140, responded to a call for a person impaled on a fence. The teams worked swiftly and freed the victim and got them into the care of EMS in just under 10 minutes. These specialized units are constantly training for such incidents, and thanks to their quick actions, the patient was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

Just after 11:30 Wednesday night, the FDNY responded to a 5-alarm fire at 481 Van Brunt Street in Brooklyn. Units arrived in under three minutes. Over 250 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. Two firefighters were transported with minor injuries. “This building is a very large, four story commercial building. Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on the second, third, fourth floor, and through the roof. Due to the amount of fire and the structural stability of the building, we removed our members and attacked the fire from the exterior, from the front and the rear with large caliber streams. The rear of this building is on the water, so we called in Marine 9, and we used some of their large caliber streams to extinguish the fire,” said Chief of Operations Kevin Woods. FDNY Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Shortly after midnight on February 27, 1975, the FDNY was called to the New York Telephone Building in Manhattan after a company employee noticed smoke on the first floor. 50 years later, this fire is still remembered for its toxic impact on FDNY members and the neighborhood. “This was the beginning of one of the most difficult fires that has ever confronted the New York City Fire Department. Before this fire would be declared under control, more than 16 hours later, over 700 firefighters from 72 units would operate at this blaze,” then Deputy Chiefs Roger Rodriguez and Elmer Chapman in a 1975 article about the operation. “The suppression of this fire was made very difficult by the heavy toxic smoke which reduced vision to inches and dictated the use of masks even for street operations. Another factor was the maze-like floor layouts and the ability of the frames to contain the beat during the fire, and after the fire was extinguished. Stripped of their insulation, the banks of wire glowed and radiated heat like a giant toaster – a toaster with an area of close to 30,000 square feet on each floor.” More than 235 members were injured. Years later, many members developed long term health effects and cancer from the fire and exposure to the toxins it produced.

Early Saturday morning, the FDNY responded to a 3-alarm fire at 1905 Flushing Avenue in Queens, bringing approximately 120 firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics to the scene. Units arrived to find heavy fire originating in a tire repair shop on the first floor, with fire quickly extending to the upper floors and into an adjoining occupancy. “Units attempted an aggressive interior attack, but due to the volume of fire and a localized collapse in the rear of the store, we were forced to transition to an exterior operation,” said Assistant Chief David Simms. “This was a deep-seated and stubborn fire involving thousands of tires, which makes extinguishment particularly challenging.” At the height of the incident, members operated under difficult conditions as crews worked to confine the fire and prevent further extension. “We had a total patient count of nine on the scene, five firefighters with minor burn injuries, and five civilians with minor injuries that were transported to area hospitals,” said EMS Division Chief Evan Suchecki. “Our teams on the scene did a great job recognizing the injuries and transporting quickly to area hospitals to ensure that treatment was rendered appropriately.” Firefighters remain on scene as operations continue. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

After more than 40 years with the FDNY, Ladder 149 Capt. Ciro Napolitano worked his final tour Wednesday before retirement. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Capt. Napolitano joined the FDNY on Aug. 2, 1986. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1996 and then to captain in 2002. He has been the captain of Ladder 149 since July 2019. The FDNY thanks Capt. Napolitano for his more than four decades of dedicated service to New York City. Here's to a happy and healthy retirement!

He follows in the footsteps of his father, Chief of Rescue Operations Joseph Downey, and his late grandfather, legendary FDNY Deputy Chief Raymond Downey, who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001. The fire spread quickly causing an expected $100,000 in damages. At the time of the fire, the store was packed with shoppers preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday. A fast-acting customer helped to briefly knock down the fire using a fire extinguisher. FDNY units arrived promptly and fully extinguished the fire. Sacchetti has been charged with arson, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and intent to damage property.

From following great leaders to becoming one himself. Firefighter David Anton of Ladder 110 will become a fire officer Thursday when he is promoted to the rank of lieutenant. "I saw pretty early on the leaders I wanted to follow, and the ones that I really admired always made sure that getting our members home safe was the most important thing," he said. "I want to follow that."
