The "Death Marches" of the Pontic Greeks were one of the most horrific aspects of the Pontic Greek Genocide, carried out by the Ottoman Turks (and later by Kemalist forces) between 1914 and 1923. The goal was the systematic extermination and ethnic cleansing of the Greek population from their ancestral homelands along the Black Sea coast of modern-day Turkey. These death marches are now widely recognized by scholars as part of a broader genocide that targeted not only Greeks, but also Armenians and Assyrians by the Young Turks and Kemalists.
