The NICU doctor was clearly upset that the mom wasn’t doing the light therapy and was instead following her pediatrician’s plan of care for her son. She requested a patient advocate and a staff meeting so they could figure out how to move forward with discharging both her and the baby. Hours later everyone gathered in her hospital room for the meeting. Her pediatrician had already told the hospital the baby was under her practice’s care, but the NICU doctor was dead-set that if the mom left, it would cause her baby tremendous brain damage and that she was putting her son at harm. She describes how, right in the middle of the staff meeting, police suddenly burst into her maternity room with guns drawn while she’s sitting in the hospital chair with her newborn.
