I studied Elect Engr, and 400level Engr students usually go on Industrial Training (IT) after the 1st semester. It was a big deal because it was a break from campus life. You get to go to work daily, earn a salary (hopefully) and feel like an adult. Everyone looked forward to it.

Turns out, I had carryovers from 300 level so I wasn’t cleared for IT. This meant I’d be staying back while everyone else left, and with my popularity, I wouldn’t be able to hide. Everyone would know. Popular singer, “anointed guy”, behind in his academics. I was devastated.

I gathered myself and left the building, straight to the chapel for departure service. Turns out I was to lead praise & worship. Imagine that. With the despair in my heart, I was supposed to lead others in singing and dancing before God. But I picked up the mic and went up the stage. I could see my peers with their booklets, but I lifted my eyes up. I told everyone to fix their eyes on Jesus. Then I did the same. 1st Semester Departure Service, December 2014. See, I sang powerfully and we praised like never before. I still have the audio recording, JOY overflowed.

In the late 1970’s, I calculated that we were going to have a global debt default. I was so confident in what that meant for the markets that I went to Congress to share my perspective. I couldn’t have been more wrong. While several countries defaulted on their debt, the impact on markets was the opposite of what I expected. And I lost a lot of money — for me and for my clients. I had to let all of my employees go. But it was the best experience that ever happened to me because it taught me that pain + reflection = progress. And it taught me three lessons that became the foundation of Bridgewater’s success.

She taught me never to think I was a billy bad a$$ - because there’s always someone bigger and badder around the corner. And daddy? He taught me to ALWAYS stand up for myself. So when you’re dealing with me? Act right. I fight back.

🗣️: Tofu has already returned to the stars. Lingling: Ever since I moved to Thailand, my mom saw how lonely I was on my own, so she got Tofu to keep me company. We grew up together. As Tofu got older, one day my mom called me and said, "Tofu can't hold on much longer; she is about to leave us." During that time, my work was incredibly busy, and I could barely squeeze out any time at all. But I desperately wanted to rush back to see her one last time. So I asked my mom to gently whisper in Tofu's ear, "Can you wait a little bit for P’Ling?" The moment my work ended, I immediately caught a flight back. The very next morning, I flew right back to continue working. In the end, I made it in time to hold Tofu one last time. That was the first time in my life experiencing the loss of such an important family member, and it was the first time I ever cried that hard. This experience taught me one thing: I don't want anyone to ever have to say in the future, "If I had known things would turn out this way, I definitely would have done something." If you want to take care of the important people around you, do it now. Don't wait. Now Tofu has gone to a place free of pain, and I tell myself this every single day.
