A train operator climbing down to the roadbed in the middle of a blizzard. Snow everywhere. Standing on a narrow plank. Can’t see where you’re putting your foot. Third rail inches away. Clearing a frozen stop arm so the signals work… so the trains move… so the city keeps running. She said her life flashed before her eyes. Not because she’s dramatic. Because she was thinking about her daughter. “How am I going to get home to her?” Three hours in a freezing cab. Radios cutting out. Communication a mess. Nerves shot. And instead of support? Many said they do not leave that much space because it is an invitation for others to cut in front of you. I’m always worried that someone is going to hit me from behind and push me into the car in front of me. (It’s happened before) Many said they can’t even see the headlights when cars are behind them, that they are up way too close. The MTA is now canceling AVAs, OTOs, and vacation requests—and trying to blur the lines by implying that if you don’t come in, you don’t get paid. That claim does NOT apply to sick days. Sick rules are contractual. Management cannot unilaterally change them—not during a snowstorm, not during an emergency, not ever.
