Same results when I walked last week under a really tight and high up canopy in the Pacific coastal forest. Rounded images of the sun were projected through pinholes onto the forest floor rather than irregular images of leafy gaps.

Any small gaps form a miniature lens. Good stuff. If you wear glasses you can leave them on the bedside table and form a lens with your hand to read the clock at night. True story.
