USC 6’5 Freshman Wesley Yates III has been one of the most underrated potential prospects in this years NBA Draft. So far this season Yates is averaging 13 PPG 2 RPG 1 SPG 48% FG 39% 3FG Yates has also played at a very high level in conference play where he’s averaging 17/3/2 on 54/47/73 splits Yates ability to score on all 3 levels along with his athleticism and shot creation makes him a very effective scorer. At 6’5 there’s not a lot of players his height and age who can score like him. Yates is also a strong off ball player.

Some games had the rare quality of being entirely unique, introducing concepts that had never been done before. These days, most games are variations of ideas that have existed for a long time. One of those unique-concept games that has stuck with me over the years is Marble Madness. I was instantly hooked the first time I played it. Although I wasn’t very good, the urge to try again (and again) was incredibly strong. It had an almost mesmerizing quality. The graphics - for 1984 - were impressive, as were the music and sound effects, which added to the “this feels very different” vibe. Most fascinating, though, were the physics: the marble reacting to slippery surfaces, bumping over ramps, and being knocked aside by the “evil marble.” It demanded real skill and patience to navigate the levels. The unique gameplay also makes it timeless in my opinion. Marble Madness looked great over 40 years ago, and will still look and play great 40 years from now. The only downside was its relative shortness with only 6 levels. Mark Cerny originally wanted to create more but the memory limitations were the main reason for the small number of levels.

There are many things that I remember about first playing Populous (1989), Bullfrog's absolutely groundbreaking God game. 1) I had no clue what I was supposed to do. 2) That didn't matter, because the game still had this irresistible pull - mostly because it was so very different from any other game I had played before. 3) The background music was incredible, almost haunting, and very much adding an extra layer of "OMG yes!" to the game. Populous lets you play as a deity shaping isometric landscapes - raising/lowering terrain, summoning floods, earthquakes, swamps, and volcanoes. I would guess that not many ever finished the game (500 levels!) but pretty much everyone played it. To me this is a historic milestone in gaming history.

But a great baseball player, Sammy Sosa, does… and we love this saying: “The bottom hand is our steering wheel, and the top hand puts it in the parking lot.” 🙌✅ #baseball #training

Another classic turns 40 this year: Bubble Bobble (Taito), created by Fukio Mitsuji. I played this first at the arcades, then later on my C64 and Amiga. The ports were brilliant and came quite close to the original arcade version. Great in single-player, even better in two-player mode. 99 levels (plus one final boss level), with hidden bonus levels, an iconic soundtrack, the cutest player characters (even the enemies looked adorable), Bubble Bobble was super addictive right from the start. Every so often I walk along my shelves and pick an old game (old as in 35+ years) and give it another go. Some have aged badly. Bubble Bobble is a great example of a timeless game. It's still fun today, especially when you play it with a friend.

And so it was last night, when one of Daniel's best friends, Alex Romo, got to watch his former high school teammate play baseball on a Major League field in Atlanta, GA. How can you not be romantic about baseball? Man! I love this game!
