TN Forest Department is set to enhance hornbill conservation efforts, marking a significant move in protecting these keystone bird species. The Great Hornbill, Malabar Grey-Hornbill, Malabar Pied-Hornbill and the Indian Grey-Hornbill crucial for forest ecosystems are under threat due to habitat loss. As part of this initiative, the state has announced 1. A Centre for Excellence to be set up for Hornbill Conservation at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. 2. Identify and protect nesting trees, including those on private lands, and recognize landowners as “Hornbill Protectors.” 3. Develop Guidelines for safeguarding nest trees of all the four hornbill species inside and out of protected areas 4. Take up ecological restoration efforts to plant and protect key food and nesting trees like Dipterocarpus indicus, Cryptocarya anamalayana, and Myristica malabaricum, many of which are endangered 5.
