Democracy is a luxury only developed countries can afford. Any nation that still has lots of developmental work to do will remain poor as long as it still employs constitutions, “good governance”, “checks and balances” and other rich people’s bs of that nature. No country has ever developed by unleashing democracy on its economy and none ever will. Every country that has ever made it economically started by suspending or ignoring democracy and by weaponising what they now call “corruption”. It may not be pretty, but it’s the only way. Of course, it’s not guaranteed that authoritarian developmentalism will work, a lot can go horribly wrong. But democracy will most definitely not work. Yes, it might keep the status quo humming along, but that’s it. In short, authoritarianism is a gamble and democracy is a guarantee—of mediocrity. Just look at South Africa. Duma Boko is finding out this crucial fact of life in real time.

Parents, please teach your daughters to never accept even a ₹10 treat from a man. You never know which one will decide that a cheap meal gives him the right to cross physical boundaries and ignore a clear NO just to recover his costs.
