If you promise to pay a student athlete NIL money and get them to commit to your school, YOU SHOULD PAY THEM WHAT YOU PROMISED. If a student athlete agrees to a NIL deal and commits to play at a school, THEY SHOULD HONOR THAT AGREEMENT. THERE SHOULD BE NO in season renegotiating of NIL deals just because a player played a few good games or made a few splash plays against a rival. Renegotiate in the offseason. If UNLV didn’t pay Sluka what was agreed they are wrong and exploiting student athletes. If UNLV did pay Sluka what was agreed and Sluka wanted more after beating Houston, Kansas and positioning UNLV in prime position to make the College Football Playoff if they continue the path they are, then Sluka and his agent are wrong. Nevertheless, my advice for Matthew Sluka would be to reverse course and play out the rest of the season. Why? For his teammates. That brotherhood is worth it. The bonds built and excitement they have built together is worth it. You won’t get this opportunity to lead a team like UNLV to the CFP again. KIDS: Every level you go up, the less likely you are to see a player try to beat a defender 1v1. Why? The higher the level you play, the less likely you are to beat a defender 1v1. Defensemen are too good. They are faster, smarter, close quicker, and there’s less time and space to even try to attempt it. If you want to play at higher levels of hockey, beating defenders down the ice 1v1 is not what is going to get you there. Developing your hockey sense by using your teammates and understanding how plays develop…that’s what translates to the next level. Check out Matt Barzal on this play. It’s 3v3 overtime so he has plenty of time and space to beat the defender up the ice 1v1, especially with his elite skillset. But no. He brings the puck to the middle, uses his situational skating to protect it, and bides time for his teammates to get open. And once Horvat does get open – he hits him for the overtime winner. 1v1 hockey does not translate to the next level. Hockey sense and awareness does. I’ve seen so many kids that were bigger and faster than everyone at young ages be rewarded for taking the puck end to end and scoring. That gets you wins at young ages, but it does not make smart hockey players. Because when everyone else catches up physically, if that player wasn’t taught the right way to play…they will get passed by. Smart hockey players make it to higher levels. On the 6th day of recruiting myths: Myth #6: “Colleges don’t recruit from high school programs.” It’s true. I’ve never seen a D1 coach at a high school game. Maybe 1-2 make it out to the big well known pre-season tournaments, but in most states, HS ball is in the middle of their own season. So this myth is mostly true if you’re in the D1 or bust mentality. Almost all of us start with that goal, but there are a million things that have to go just right to make that happen. There are plenty of players with enough talent to play D1 that don’t start there. I know this because I played with some amazing ones. They ended up going the JUCO route for one reason or another, killed it as All-Americans, and are now playing at a higher level. I had local JUCO coaches at our HS games all the time. I actually saw them more often in high school than I did at the club tournaments I played in. Even if you think you’re destined for D1, it’s important not to discount it. What happens if you’re injured your sophomore or junior year, or you developed a little too late for D1 programs who have filled their class? What happens if your freshman grades sunk your GPA? What if the programs that offer you don’t have enough athletic aid to make the finances work for your family? To say all recruiting happens in club is more like saying I’m only interested in one path to my goal. And… if you kill it in high school season and get some recognition it can be enough to catch the attention of D1 programs. I had a good friend that nailed it her junior year. She had not received any offers going into May, but her HS season was incredible. She made zero errors all season! Her bat was 🔥 and she ended up getting selected as the Conference Offensive Player of the Year across the state of Arizona. She posted the award on X and immediately she had a D1 coach follow her. That coach eventually came to watch her play in club and have her out for a visit. The award didn’t get her an offer and neither did the high school play directly, but it built enough credibility to get some interest. And for people outside the “recruiting bubble”, these seemingly little things can be the tipping point. She’s a freshman this year playing D1 softball. So… if you’re thinking High School sports don’t provide recruiting opportunities, you’re thinking too narrowly. The opportunity looks different, but it’s still an opportunity to increase your odds of playing at the next level. #RecruitingRules Rule #2: Build your brand. Create your own luck - High school sports provided one of the best opportunities I had to build my brand. Local media coverage. State tournaments and awards. Those are things that don’t happen often in club. The coaches might not be at the field to watch during their own season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep building your brand to improve your opportunities later!

You can be a great team with resources that rank in the middle of your conference. You can take a job and have success at a school in which the administration has higher expectations than they give you resources. The reality is, it is difficult to get any head coaching position, especially for those looking for their first. First time head coaches usually aren’t getting max resourced jobs in high school, college, or in the pros. The resource excuse is often a crutch for coaches: “We didn’t beat them because they have more.” “How are we suppose to win with our facilities?” “We travel in vans. They travel charter; they are more well-rested and prepared.” When deciding whether to apply for, go through the hiring process, and ultimately, making the decision to accept a new position, coaches should ask themselves three questions: 1. “Is my new administration open-minded to finding creative solutions to bridging the resource gaps so we can provide the best experience for our student-athletes?” -Creating revenue: My current athletic director David Spafford has taught me a lot about revenue creation in athletics. There are a lot of ways to bridge the budget gap including fundraising, corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, facility rentals, camps, and much more. The possibilities are endless. If you are looking at a position where the allocated resources aren’t where they need to be to compete then ask yourself if you’re the right person to help create revenue. You’ll see a job where the previous 10 years yielded multiple coaches and no success. Then one coach comes in and turns everything around without a change to the allocated resources. Chances are, the new coach is a better fit for the job than prior coaches. They usually arrive with a bag full of creative solutions and positive energy to move the program forward. If you don’t have budget money for post-workout nutrition for your student-athletes then go raise money. If you need a new weight room then go talk to corporate sponsors around the community about giving X amount of dollars annually for the next 10 years. Get an architectural rendering. Go out and show the community what is needed, why it benefits them and others. Remember, actual coaching is a small percentage of the job. Building a program is so much more. 2. “What do I need as a coach for success, what are my non-negotiables, and does this position provide them so I can help the school, program, and student-athletes achieve success?” -Every coach needs talented players, but it’s more than that. Style of play is really important for each coach. Does the job you’re considering allow you to work with and develop the type of athlete you need to be successful. Some coaches are flexible in working with different leadership styles, many are not. Can you handle an athletic director who micro-manages or who can and will blow up on you? Do you prefer a more hands-off AD? What kind of boss do you need and does the job provide it? Make a list of 3-5 non-negotiables. Does the job have them? If they don’t then you already know your answer. The job has to line up with your core values. 3. “Can we compete towards the top third of the conference if I am the head coach at this job?” -The quality of every job is ultimately on a sliding scale based on how good the conference is. Maybe the job you are considering is poorly-resourced but it’s also in a weak conference. This is the type of job you should consider taking. The jobs you need to avoid are the worst jobs within the best leagues. You can take and find success in a low-resourced positions if the league is just ok. However, there is minimal pathway to success if you’re in the best league and at an under-resourced school. If you do catch lighting in a bottle, there won’t be sustainability with this set up.

The resource excuse is often a crutch for coaches: “We didn’t beat them because they have more.” “How are we suppose to win with our facilities?” “We travel in vans. They travel charter; they are more well-rested and prepared.” When deciding whether to apply for, go through the hiring process, and ultimately, making the decision to accept a new position, coaches should ask themselves three questions: 1. “Is my new administration open-minded to finding creative solutions to bridging the resource gaps so we can provide the best experience for our student-athletes?” -Creating revenue: My current athletic director David Spafford has taught me a lot about revenue creation in athletics. There are a lot of ways to bridge the budget gap including fundraising, corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, facility rentals, camps, and much more. The possibilities are endless. If you are looking at a position where the allocated resources aren’t where they need to be to compete then ask yourself if you’re the right person to help create revenue. You’ll see a job where the previous 10 years yielded multiple coaches and no success. Then one coach comes in and turns everything around without a change to the allocated resources. Chances are, the new coach is a better fit for the job than prior coaches. They usually arrive with a bag full of creative solutions and positive energy to move the program forward. If you don’t have budget money for post-workout nutrition for your student-athletes then go raise money. If you need a new weight room then go talk to corporate sponsors around the community about giving X amount of dollars annually for the next 10 years. Get an architectural rendering. Go out and show the community what is needed, why it benefits them and others. Remember, actual coaching is a small percentage of the job. Building a program is so much more. 2. “What do I need as a coach for success, what are my non-negotiables, and does this position provide them so I can help the school, program, and student-athletes achieve success?” -Every coach needs talented players, but it’s more than that. Style of play is really important for each coach. Does the job you’re considering allow you to work with and develop the type of athlete you need to be successful. Some coaches are flexible in working with different leadership styles, many are not. Can you handle an athletic director who micro-manages or who can and will blow up on you? Do you prefer a more hands-off AD? What kind of boss do you need and does the job provide it? Make a list of 3-5 non-negotiables. Does the job have them? If they don’t then you already know your answer. The job has to line up with your core values. 3. “Can we compete towards the top third of the conference if I am the head coach at this job?” -The quality of every job is ultimately on a sliding scale based on how good the conference is. Maybe the job you are considering is poorly-resourced but it’s also in a weak conference. This is the type of job you should consider taking. The jobs you need to avoid are the worst jobs within the best leagues. You can take and find success in a low-resourced positions if the league is just ok. However, there is minimal pathway to success if you’re in the best league and at an under-resourced school. If you do catch lighting in a bottle, there won’t be sustainability with this set up.

Henrik Karlsson may be the best new writer I know. He has near-superhuman powers of eloquence and perception, and if you aren’t reading his Substack, it’s time to change that. How does he do it? Some answers: 1. A blog post is a very long and complex search query to find fascinating people and make them route interesting stuff to your inbox. 2. Almost everybody would be well-served thinking more about what to focus on. 3. Always, always aim to reach past your current understanding of a topic — to reach the thought behind the thought. 4. Beware of knowledge shields: These are mental models that are good enough to explain most of what we see, but cause us to ignore everything else, filter out contradictory evidence, and resist deeper explanations of reality. 5. Many of the greatest mathematicians didn't think in words or symbols; they thought kinetically. They'd feel ideas in their hands and follow the intelligence of their body. 6. When drawing, the trick is to spend more time looking at the thing you’re trying to describe than actually drawing. The same is true for writing. Look at what you’re describing more than the words you’ve written. 7. The philosopher Wittgenstein said: “Don’t think, look!” 8. "I'll go and look at a plant. I could stand and look at that for a long time, just describing what I'm seeing and then correcting it again and again." 9. The writing is finally good when what you’ve written evokes the same sense of aliveness and truth as the thing you’re trying to describe. Edit your writing until that’s true. 10. Finding your people is perhaps the biggest perk of writing online, but if you follow conventional writing advice, you will cut the very things that’ll help you find the people you’re looking for. 11. “I need to let things live in my body for about a year before I can actually turn them into essays.” 12. This is obvious, but bears repeating: If you write the best thing that’s ever been written about a topic, you’ll receive repeat traffic for years to come. There’s lots of competition for mediocre writing, but very little for any piece that’s 5-10x better than average, which is paradoxically the easier strategy to pursue. 13. If you insist on making your writing immediately comprehensible, you’ll block yourself off from especially interesting ideas that are right at the edge of language. 14. "Sometimes I'll lie on the sofa in my writing studio, close my eyes, and put on voice transcription and just talk." 15. To write is to pin your thoughts to the table so you can examine them. 16. The real work of becoming a writer is in becoming the kind of person who can think interesting thoughts, and essays are the exhaust from that process of personal growth.
