Before telling you about butterflies generally, let me tell you something spectacular about THIS butterfly. Its name is Alcon blue butterfly. It is one of the most famous examples of an extreme social parasite in the butterfly world. How the deception works: After the female Alcon Blue lays her eggs and they hatch, feeds on the plant for about 2–3 weeks, going through its first three instars (growth stages). When it reaches the fourth instar, the caterpillar drops to the ground and waits. It secretes chemicals (allomones) from a special gland that mimic the exact scent profile of the brood (larvae/pupae) of a myrmica ants. When the worker ants encounter the caterpillar, they'll mistake it for one of their own lost larvae, and carry it back into their underground nest. In some populations, the caterpillar even makes tiny sounds that imitate the “queen ant” calls, which elevates its status inside the colony. Ants will actually prefer feeding the caterpillar over their own larvae! The caterpillar then becomes a ruthless predator and eats hundreds of ant grubs over the next 10–22 months. After almost a year (or even two in some cases), the caterpillar pupates inside the ant nest. The adult butterfly emerges, inflates its wings, and crawls out of the nest (often at dawn when ants are less active). The ants don’t attack it because its scales reduce friction and it may release calming chemicals.

One of the main stories says that during earlier worlds, when disasters like fire or ice came, the Ant People guided some of the Hopi into tunnels beneath the earth to keep them safe. Down there, they were given food and taught how to survive until it was safe to return to the surface. The Ant People are described as hardworking and cooperative, much like ants themselves, and they are remembered as helpers rather than rulers. The stories also say the Ant People shared knowledge with the Hopi. This included how to store food, live simply, and work together as a group. In some versions, they helped guide people between different “worlds,” which are seen as cycles of time where each world ends and another begins. These teachings are still reflected in Hopi values today, especially the idea of living in balance and preparing for hard times. The underground setting is an important part of the story, and many see it as both a real place and a symbol of protection and survival during periods when the surface world becomes unstable.

In a new study from MIT and the University of Queensland, 272 international experts were asked to judge the biggest risks from AI between now and 2030. They concluded that 18 of the 24 risks they looked at each carry at least a 1 in 10 chance of a catastrophic outcome, which they defined as something that kills more than a million people or wipes out more than 100 billion dollars. The risks they worried about most were not science fiction robots. They were AI being used to build weapons, launch large scale cyberattacks, and concentrate power and money in very few hands. None of this is a prediction that it will happen. It is a measure of how seriously the field's own experts take the danger. And the numbers are not small.
