Earlier this year Brechin's Bar in Govan changed hands when David Low acquired it. They're now giving the place a bit of a spruce up, and when the hardboard sheeting on the exterior was removed, lo and behold, the original Victorian panelling was revealed. 🎥 Brechin's Bar

The old pub should be in good hands. Low has previously owned the Arlington and is the current custodian of the Star Bar.

This pub has a bit of a personal connection for me. My dad and granda drank in there, and the generations before them were also Govanites, so they'd no doubt have seen this old panelling before it was covered up in the 60s.

Mind you, the lavvies were an abomination the last time I was in, so hopefully they'll get a bit of attention 😁

Why the hell is so much of our past covered up by 3rd rate materials? Renovating what existed and looking after it would be way better. I hate the tacky shopfronts and signs stuck on these beautiful old sandstone buildings.

That will look good again when it's been cleaned up and revarnished. One or two of the bars in Partick had their modern frontages removed and now look magnificent

My father and uncle were regulars, my uncle lived across the road,in Burleigh street, but my Dad travelled from Drumchapel to drink in the "Black Man" of a Saturday, that's dedication.

Everyone I knew called that boozer 'The Black Man' even though the sign said Brechins 🤷🏻‍♂️

Coming from Govan I remember all the pubs along govan road up to Fairfields were like this, some great looking woodwork outside and some of the windows were just like this , good luck with the renovation and brining this back to life .

Only an absolute reprobate would cover that up

I love this pub, a firm favourite of any subcrawl. I run a men’s basketball team & our tradition is a Christmas night out subcrawl. The barmaids used to remember us every year (because most are extremely tall) and fire us into the “Ladies lounge” for a seat.

What do think motivated people to cover up architectural details?

Redecoration in the past was criminal.

Worth all that work!
