A whole train of big #solarstorms are on their way, along with some smaller storms hitting now, and some fast solar wind! It is an #aurora photographers dream starting now and lasting at least through the weekend. Right now, the biggest of the storms should hit late Thursday or early Friday morning and is well-represented in NOAA's prediction model. You can also get a 3D view of the coming solar storm in my earlier post. G3 to G4 storm levels are possible by Friday.

We could have a geomagnetic storm today 💥 Earth is being hit by fast solar wind at ~650 km/s with a density <1 p/cm^3. The magnetic field is 10 nT (2x stronger than normal), and the field just flipped into good connection with Earth's (Bz -5 nT).

A SOLAR TSUNAMI: We are expecting wave after wave of coronal mass ejections to striking the Earth on 11th and 12th May. Solar wind speeds of about 800 km/s are possible. Strong and extended geomagnetic storms likely with aurora visible at lower-than-normal latitudes. Stay tuned.

If NOAA SWPC's CME model is correct, we may get hit by a pretty fast solar storm Thursday night. Currently, there is a G3/Strong Storm watch for Thursday and Friday, and depending on what we see at Earth, auroral displays may be seen further equatorward than usual. Stay tuned!

We may have some #aurora fun coming! More than 4 solar storms have been launched in the past few days from Region 4334. Some of them are headed to Earth! Along with the fast solar wind picking up by January 9, we could see a bumpy ride with storm conditions peaking January 11. G1 conditions expected thus far, but another storm just launched so forecasts may be changing rapidly! The first video highlights storms launched since January 6. The second video shows a closeup of Storms 3 and 4, which launched today in the Earth-Strike Zone. More analysis is coming.

A solar storm impact has arrived as expected, and now geomagnetic activity is increasing! The storm is dense (~13 /cm3), slow (~420 km/s), and double the strength (~11 nT) of the normal solar wind. Unless it dramatically strengthens we're probably looking at G1 levels at most.

WE HAVE IMPACT. The EMP from the solar storm shockwave spiked the interplanetary magnetic field to Bt 87 nT and Bz -32 nT which is INSANE. We're simultaneously in severe G4 geomagnetic and S4 radiation storms. Now the interplanetary magnetic field is at Bt ~35 nT and Bz -23 nT.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Halloween Solar Storms of 2003. This was a period of exceptional high solar activity during Solar Cycle 23 including the strongest solar flare recorded in modern history peaking between X28 and X45. There were also many earth-directed coronal mass ejections which caused multiple G5 geomagnetic storms. Aurora displays were visible as far south as Texas in the USA and Spain in Europe. 10 year ago we made a YouTube special about these events. Well worth a look if you haven't seen it yet!

A cloud of charged particles reached Earth in less than 24 hours. On the night of January 19–20, the aurora was observed in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Western Europe, and North America. This lets more cosmic radiation into the Solar System, and this directly impacts the climate on Earth and increases volcanic activity. The last Little Ice Age occurred during a Grand Solar Minimum. But the coming Grand Solar Minimum is going to hit harder because the Earth's magnetic field is at least 30% weaker and, with the ongoing geomagnetic excursion, is continuing to weaken. This will let in more cosmic radiation, which will directly cause mutations, pandemics, cooling, crop failures, and even crustal displacement. Since the advent of modern technology, we haven't experienced either a Grand Solar Minimum or a geomagnetic excursion, and we are due for both.

In the last 38 hours we've had 1.7 and 1.1 X-flares from the Sun, earthquake activity off the coast of Japan (M6.8, M6.4, M6.0) has becoming worrying and looking like foreshock activity for a BIG earthquake (M8+), and we're now in a S1 radiation storm from the 2nd X-flare. Multiple solar storm impacts are expected over the next few days. Big linear planetary alignment occurs on the 20th with the Sun, Mercury, Moon, Earth, and Uranus with Pluto and Saturn+Neptune in harmonic aspects. Yikes...
