Ed Harris says he felt “misled” about his “inconsequential” role on “Dutton Ranch,” and that halfway through filming Season 1, he was telling his team to “get me the f--- out of here.” “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the... season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters,” Harris said. “And that wasn’t really the case... I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh.'” Harris explained that when he actually watched “Dutton Ranch,” he thought it was “pretty good,” and he felt his character was “relatively important to the story.” However, during filming, “it didn’t feel that way.” “I’m being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in Season 2],” he says. “I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth.”show more

Ed is wrong. His character was important just more subtle. He befriended Rip and Beth but more importantly he humanized the Annette Bening character. Without him, her character would have been one dimensional. 💯💯💯

Ed has obviously not watched the same show I watched because his character of Everett McKinney, DVM is a crucial part of the story dynamic while bringing humanity and truth to the table, not to mention being a bad ass in that firefight!!! He is the moral compass. I think he is super.

I don’t know what he was promised, but I enjoyed the show and he was a pivotal character in it. Yes his character emerged over episodes that is for sure. I remember the bar scene. Too bad his song was left out.

I thought Ed Harris was riveting in Dutton Ranch & he was 1 of the main characters. Very integral to the story. Weird how he thought otherwise. When you're shooting & your scenes are out of sequence, it can be hard to tell what the outcome will be. Glad he is happier with the finished product.

It was completely clear Ed’s character was an important part of the story. I’m sure his paycheck was very good as well. Ask just about any supporting actor who works in TV and Film and they will tell you that you really have no idea how much of your scene work will make the final cut. Guessing the director(s) didn’t waste time with a lot of takes and Ed felt like he didn’t get to act that much. Ed - love you in everything you do - but you do “Ed” in every role. You are probably a one-take wonder. Consistent and effective. Get over your damn self and show some gratitude that you still got it, brother.

Back when we were filming it was summer. You know when it comes to how he treats himself…how should I put it his self-requirements, the standards he sets for himself… how do I explain this? There was this one thing that really honestly, even I felt it. I thought, wow, he’s really incredible. We were filming in the middle of summer, you know? It was during summer vacation super hot. Really, really hot. And how disciplined was he? He was so disciplined that, in order to protect his voice, in weather that hot, he wore a scarf. You know? And he drank hot water out of a thermos. I really thought, wow this guy is so cool! Drinking from a thermos, wearing a scarf you know? That scene was just… do you understand the kind of shock I felt seeing that at the time? Everyone else was wearing T-shirts, and we were practicing dancing, completely soaked in sweat. And there he was wearing a scarf. Director Antoine Fuqua was so blown away by his performance, he says he thinks he "forgot to yell cut”. He explains… “That’s Denzel. He was just in his zone. I mean, that was one of those moment...people talk about AI. Those are the moments where you go...it's a great tool. It's gonna be a great tool, I think...but the emotion, and the moment that an actor can bring - you can't predict that. That's something that's just inside of Denzel. And when that came out, I was just like - I hope I got it. I just turned to my operator - who was shaking- I looked over at the guy - I was like, “please tell me you got that.” Because that was the take. That was it. There was no other take - I mean, how do you tell an actor like that, that that wasn't good enough? …He walked over to me, and he just had this look in his eyes. I was like, “you good?” He said, “you good?” I said, “Yeah…” Some of that was in the script, but he flipped it the way he did it. "Putting cases on all you." He kind of added some things in there. And then he just went into a whole other zone with the whole King Kong thing- with Pelican Bay - Denzel started that. That was Denzel. That was him, man. He just kind of lit up, and I think I forgot to yell cut. I was just watching it, because everybody started walking away, and I'm just watching him, and then he lights a cigarette - and he's talking - and I'm just watching him. I think at some point he probably looked at me like, you going to cut? And I'm like, “oh yeah, yeah, cut.” He was still in it. That's the thing with Denzel. He was so Alonso…I'm just watching him for a while because I didn't know what else he was going to do. It was just so magical. And then I think he looked up at me and I was like, “Okay, cut, cut.”
