Sir Alan led efforts over many years to prove that the Horizon software system supplied by Fujitsu, the Japanese technology company, was faulty. Hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted between 1999 and 2015, with scores of people either ending their own lives or making attempts to do so. However, it was only after ITV turned their fight for justice into a drama, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, that the government accelerated plans to deliver redress to victims. Even so, the compensation scheme set up to administer redress has been mired in controversy. Writing in The Sunday Times in May, Sir Alan described the process as "quasi-kangaroo courts in which the Department for Business and Trade sits in judgement of the claims and alters the goalposts as and when it chooses". "Claims are, and have been, knocked back on the basis that legally you would not be able to make them, or that the parameters of the scheme do not extend to certain items." Sir Alan had previously been made compensation offers worth just one-sixth of his claim - which he had labelled "derisory", with a second offer amounting to a third of the sum he was seeking. Sir Ross Cranston, a former High Court judge, adjudicates on cases where a claimant disputes a compensation offer from the government and then objects to the results of a review by an independent panel. In 2017, Sir Alan and a group of 555 sub-postmasters sued the Post Office in the High Court, ultimately winning a £58m settlement. However, swingeing legal fees left the group with just £12m of that sum, prompting ministers to establish a separate compensation scheme amid a growing outcry. A significant number of other sub-postmasters have also complained publicly about the pace, and outcome, of the compensation process. The first volume of Sir Wyn Williams's public inquiry into the Horizon scandal was published in July, and concluded that at least 13 people may have taken their own lives after being accused of wrongdoing, even though the Post Office and Fujitsu knew the Horizon system was flawed. The miscarriage of justice left the Post Office's reputation, and that of former bosses including chief executive Paula Vennells, in tatters. Trump’s approach to corruption is to do everything in the open. Make it so ridiculous and so inundating that people’s heads spin and then once they’re numb, keep going. The Epstein files are an atrocity. The allegations and the behavior documented in those files are disgusting. Yet, Trump masterfully buried the lead on all of it — through a war, through noise, through sheer volume of chaos. When you ask voters what they care about, the Epstein files are at the bottom of the list. They want jobs and gas prices they can afford. Trump’s corruption isn’t even on their radar screen. Do not underestimate him. He’s sitting at 34% approval and he still has 9/10 self-identified Republicans doing whatever he says. He says bark. They say woof. He says jump. How high, sir? That’s the architecture of power he’s built and it’s more durable than his critics want to admit.

For over two decades Alan has led the JFSA (Justice for Sub Postmasters Alliance) in a constant David vs Goliath battle against the Post Office and their shareholder the government. Against all odds as both the Post Office and the Department for Business threw everything at the High Court GLO (as well as over £100m over taxpayer cash) and then attempting to recuse Justice Fraser for apparent bias, two landmark Judgements were handed down. These are known as the Common Issues Judgement and the Horizon Issues Judgement. Emma Simpson reporting for BBC News (UK) wrote :- Bates learned of knighthood at Post Office inquiry‼️ The campaigner and former sub-postmaster, Alan Bates, was at the public inquiry into the Post Office scandal when he received the news that he was to be knighted in the King's Birthday Honours. He had travelled from his home in Llandudno to hear former Post Office CEO Paula Vennells give evidence, breaking her near-decade long silence. “It was all a bit of a surprise,” Sir Alan, as he is now known, told the BBC. He was told that he had to let the Honours Committee know by the end of the day whether he would accept. For the last 15 years, Sir Alan has campaigned for justice for hundreds of sub-postmasters who were wrongfully prosecuted for theft and false accounting, when faulty software called Horizon made it look like money was missing from their accounts. He had already rejected the offer of an OBE last year, telling the Honours Committee that it would be inappropriate to accept it whilst Ms Vennells kept hold of her CBE for services to the Post Office and many victims continued to suffer. Ms Vennells handed back her CBE earlier this year amid mounting pressure in the aftermath of the ITV drama in January which sparked national outrage over the scandal. “I went and had a confidential talk with somebody who knows what’s gone on over the years and they said to me, 'well you’ve done the heavy lifting, others are doing the rest now.' And on reflection, I knew so many people who were keen for me to actually receive something, I felt I would be insulting them as much as anyone else if I refused it at this time," Sir Alan said. He insisted the honour was not just for him but also for his group, the Justice for Sub-Postmasters Alliance, which he started in 2009. “I think it’s another string to my bow to try and drive the rest of the campaign home. We have got to get funding for everybody. And that’s been my priority now for some time. And if it helps there, then great. It’s wonderful.” Sir Alan said his work was far from finished, adding that he would pursue court action, if necessary, to get financial redress for the victims who took part in the original High Court action that helped expose the Horizon IT scandal. “I think the nation will support us if we have to go ahead with another case,” he said. The former sub-postmaster's dogged pursuit of the truth began after refusing to accept losses at his own post office which he took over in 1998. Had he ever thought about giving up and letting it go? “I could never do that. We’ve all seen the horror stories, and there are so many. In Jacob Rees-Mogg’s desperation during the Oxford Islam debate, he also came up with this bit of loony argument, praising Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406) as a great Islamic political theorist we ought to admire in the West today. Sir Jacob is a fan of Ibn Khaldun’s writings on taxation. But what does he think of the rest of political thought? Unlike some contemporary scholars who argued Jihad should only be defensive, Ibn Khaldun explicitly stated that Islam has a unique divine obligation to aggressively subjugate other nations. He wrote: “In the Islamic community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force.” He contrasted Islam with Christianity, arguing that Christians were not commanded to seek global political dominion, whereas Muslims were. He fiercely held that Muslims were intrinsically culturally and morally superior to all non-Muslims simply by virtue of possessing the Islamic faith and legal code. He also argued that an oppressive, tyrannical, and unjust Muslim ruler was vastly preferable to even a single day of civil unrest or rebellion, and that citizens have an absolute religious duty to unconditionally submit to state authority, even if the ruler is actively stealing their property or acting cruelly. In his foundational work, The Muqaddimah, he also explains his pseudo-scientific views on sub-Saharan Africans, explicitly writing that people living in the extreme hot climates of sub-Saharan Africa were “closer to dumb animals than to rational beings” and alleged that they lived in caves and engaged in cannibalism. He used these prejudices to justify the Arab slave trade, writing: “Therefore, the Negro nations are, as a rule, submissive to slavery, because Negroes have little that is essentially human and possess attributes that are quite similar to those of dumb animals. He also claimed that Black people were characterized by universal “stupidity, levity, excitability, and great emotionalism,” attributing this to the “hot air” of their geographic zone. His views on Islamic political supremacy were uncompromising, and he openly argued that a religious theocracy (Khilafah) was the only legitimate form of governance. He explicitly stated that purely secular political systems based on human reason are fundamentally corrupt and sinful because they prioritise worldly greed over divine law. He even had zero tolerance for heterodoxy within the Muslim world, railing against Shia Muslims, and aggressively condemned and sought to ban the works of ecstatic or philosophical Sufi mystics (such as Ibn Arabi). My name is John Watt, and I'm one of the COVID vaccine injured in this country. Why are the people who are in charge who told us all to do the right thing have left us all to rot and left me and the thousands and the tens of thousands in this country to rot? God puts these ideas in our head that we have to blur out. I've been looked down and should've fallen so many times by controlled people for just saying what I actually felt even though there are a lot of people that felt very similar to that so that just being able to have these three words, nigger, hell, Hitler, and finally put it in three words that you wouldn't see together and to have been blessed to channel the greatest song that's been made to date, the energy, you know. Some Big Numbers To Get Excited About Regular readers will know I often write of frustration at not moving fast enough. This mission I am on is really hard and sometimes it can seem impossibly big when I am down in the weeds dealing with dog issues on a daily basis. I have to say though that writing this tonight and looking through some numbers I feel for the first time that I am starting to make some large scale progress… A Second Island 🌴🥥 I live and help the dogs on the island of Koh Samui. There is an island of equal size called Koh Phangan just across the water. You probably have heard of it as the home of the world famous Full Moon Party. They have a similar problem with street dogs. Since the the 1st May I have starting funding a wonderful foundation called PACS to sterilise dogs there. They are starting with 50 this month. This is going to stop 1000s of future puppies. A big step. 90,000 Meals Served in 2023 So Far 🥘👨‍🍳 The cooking never stops. The dogs are all starting to benefit from a consistent and healthy meal per day. All the food is prepared in a central kitchen and handed out to volunteers to feed their dogs. With 5000 meals served per week around the island it blows my mind that soon we will serve the 100,000th wholesome plate of food in 2023. It wasn’t that long ago I was driving around on my moped with a 10kg bag of dry food feeding a paltry 20 dogs per day on my own. 7 Puppies Re-Homed 🐶🏠 In the last couple of weeks there have been 25-30 puppies show up. It can be incredibly tough to find them homes but thanks to a great Thai lady I have been able to get 7 into their forever homes around the country. It has involved a lot of vet visits, 1000kms of travel and lots of expense but that is 7 dogs who have a future now who wouldn’t have made it otherwise. 2 Miracles For Lady 🙏😊 The first miracle for Lady was the fact that she got off the street and was able to start walking a little again despite her two broken hips. We’ve been getting her a lot of treatment and she is thriving. Her 2nd miracle was when a lovely newly retired gentleman called Jamie spotted her and offered Lady a forever home to live out her life right here on the island. Nobody usually wants old and sick dogs so this incredibly selfless act is the huge slice of luck that Lady deserved after all the suffering she has endured. The Best Day Of Tina’s Life 🐕🥰 Tina was used for breeding puppies. We all saw the horrendous state she was in when she was rescued. Last week she was well enough to be sterilised so as she never has to have another puppy in her life again. It might seem like a small footnote in the bigger scheme of things but it was a moment of closure for this wonderful lady who has suffered so much. She can now just focus on being a dog for for the first time in her life and sharing all the love she has to give. Tina was the 521st dog I have sterilised since starting. King Whacker Of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✈️ Whacker is a very special dog who was one of the first arrivals back in November. Someone had tried to kill him with a pick axe. After recovering he turned into a true gent and is the big boss at the land. I promised he would never have to go back on the streets and this week after a process to find him the right home he got the news that he will be heading to Glasgow. Long live Whacker, the King of Scotland. 125 Dogs To Be Sterilised In May ✂️🐕 I spoke about how abstract sterilising can be for many people to understand but it is what will save the most dogs from suffering. In all of 2022 I was able to do 302 dogs. In the month of May alone I have a minimum target to fund 125. In June I hope to take that to 250 dogs for the month. Not easy and very expensive but I’m putting the groundwork in place to scale this up. Nothing is more important. Little Rodney was in getting the snip last week as one of the dogs this month. 7 European Dogs 🇪🇺🛫 By the end of June there will be 7 dogs who have traveled to Europe. Lottie, Hope, King Whacker, Rodney and Moritz will join Little Squeak and Peaches who just arrived in Germany. I can’t explain how hard it is to figure all this stuff out and get the processes in place. I’m focusing on Europe now as it is the easiest for travel and paperwork but the rest of the world will happen soon too. It’s only 7 dogs but seeing them in their homes or about to travel makes me so happy and proud for them all. Progress The suffering I see on a daily basis for street dogs means that I am never really happy with the speed and progress of my mission. I just want to help them all immediately but that isn’t possible. Having said that, reading this update and knowing what else is coming in the pipeline makes me feel that I am making genuine progress. Between food, funding sterilisations, medical care and re-homing dogs I can genuinely now say I’m helping 100s of dogs per month but also stopping the suffering of 1000s in the future. As I always say I could never do any of this without the online support and good wishes of everybody on the mission with me. I don’t feel like I am alone doing this. My role is to make sure I don’t waste all the support and ensure I think of ways to move faster and execute accordingly. A lot done, a lore more to do.
