There was a time when Dr. Manmohan Singh was a student at Cambridge, living on a scholarship so modest that he sometimes had to skip meals or survive on a sixpence Cadbury’s bar. He went on to graduate with First Class Honours in Economics. Decades later, Cambridge honoured him with an honorary Doctor of Law degree. From struggling to afford a meal to helping reshape India’s economy, his life was a reminder of what education, perseverance and public service can make possible. Remembering former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji on his birth anniversary.

Everyone knows Helen Keller's name, but the real miracle worker behind the legend is Anne Sullivan She was raised in crushing poverty as the daughter of Irish immigrants, lost her mom young to tuberculosis, dealt with near-blindness from a painful eye disease starting at age 5, and then her alcoholic father abandoned her and her brother. At just 10, they were sent to the notorious Tewksbury Almshouse, an overcrowded, underfunded poorhouse full of unspeakable horrors, abuse, and despair. Her little brother died there within months, leaving Anne completely alone in what she later called an "earthly hell", but Anne's unbreakable strength and perseverance turned all that pain into purpose. She fought for her education, got into Perkins School for the Blind, graduated at the top of her class, and then took on teaching 7 yr old Helen Keller in 1887. Through genius, patience, and innovative touch methods, she gave Helen language and a voice revolutionizing education for deafblind people and setting the bar for what’s possible for millions with disabilities ever since. Her story proves that even from the darkest places, one fierce woman can change the world forever. 🙏🫶🙏

Why are Jews so successful in so many industries? The answer lies in history, culture, and values - not myths. 1. Banking & Finance: In medieval Europe, Christians were forbidden by the Church to lend money with interest. Jews, often barred from land ownership and many trades, entered moneylending - one of the few professions open to them. Over centuries, this developed strong financial literacy and trust networks. 2. Entertainment & Media: Early Hollywood was founded largely by Jewish immigrants shut out of other industries. They built a storytelling empire from scratch; studios like Warner Bros., Paramount, and Universal, turning discrimination into opportunity. 3. Science & Medicine: Jewish emphasis on education and critical thinking; rooted in studying Torah and Talmud - fostered excellence in medicine, physics, and mathematics. Despite being less than 0.2% of the world's population, Jews have received over 20% of Nobel Prizes. Out of perseverance, persecution, exclusion, and strong family values over the millennia, the Jewish population learned to be resilient by defining their own opportunities. This has allowed them to preserve their heritage against all odds including the Holocaust. As of January 2026, the Jewish population has not yet reached the population numbers recorded prior to the Holocaust!

He once delivered tiffins to support his family. Today, he serves the nation as a UPSC officer. In a small village in Maharashtra, Bapusaheb Gaikwad grew up watching his parents struggle every day. His mother washed utensils in houses and mess kitchens. His father spent sleepless nights working as a watchman at construction sites. Seeing their sacrifices, Bapusaheb realised early that education was the only way he could change his family’s future. So alongside his studies, he started delivering tiffins to help with household expenses. Years later, his hard work helped him secure a job at Larsen & Toubro (L&T) — bringing much-needed financial stability to his family. But he had a bigger dream. Determined to serve the nation, he left his job, and began preparing for the UPSC examination. He appeared multiple times, refusing to give up. And finally, his perseverance paid off. Bapusaheb Gaikwad secured All India Rank 561 in the UPSC examination. A proud moment for his parents and the nation. I first met Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla at an annual event of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Mr Uttam Prakash Agarwal, whom I knew well, was then the President of ICAI and had invited me to the occasion. Many years have passed, but Mr Birla’s speech that day has remained with me. The Chartered Accountancy examination is among India’s toughest professional examinations ~ an institution where merit, discipline and perseverance ultimately decide the outcome. Kumar Mangalam Birla is also one of the rare inheritors of a great business legacy who earned the distinction of becoming a Chartered Accountant. His success may appear extraordinary today, but nothing extraordinary is built overnight. He recently shared the ancient Sanskrit wisdom that has guided his philosophy: शनैः पन्थाः शनैः कन्था शनैः पर्वतमस्तकम् । शनैर्विद्या शनैर्वित्तं पञ्चैतानि शनैः शनैः ॥ A long journey is completed one step at a time. A quilt is woven one stitch at a time. A mountain is climbed one careful step at a time. Knowledge is acquired slowly. Wealth, too, is built gradually. We live in an age that celebrates speed. But education, character, institutions, businesses and enduring wealth are never created through shortcuts. Great things take time. And the greatest things are built—शनैः शनैः—slowly, steadily and patiently.
