Today, I joined Alupe University in celebrating its 4th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees and Award of Diplomas, where I congratulated the 439 graduands for their hard work and perseverance. I reaffirmed that Alupe University must continue to uphold its identity as an international centre of excellence and resist any form of localization. I reminded the graduands that their peers are global, competing with students from institutions like Harvard and Oxford and emphasized the need for strict meritocracy in university leadership, continuous modernization of teaching methods, and the protection of diverse academic programs from short-term market pressures. I also addressed the financial crisis facing public universities, which collectively owe over KSh 80 billion, noting that Kenya has sufficient resources but is hindered by financial indiscipline, mismanagement and inefficiencies. I reiterated that education is a constitutional right under Article 53 and questioned the continued use of fee structures that contradict this guarantee. I first met Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla at an annual event of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Mr Uttam Prakash Agarwal, whom I knew well, was then the President of ICAI and had invited me to the occasion. Many years have passed, but Mr Birla’s speech that day has remained with me. The Chartered Accountancy examination is among India’s toughest professional examinations ~ an institution where merit, discipline and perseverance ultimately decide the outcome. Kumar Mangalam Birla is also one of the rare inheritors of a great business legacy who earned the distinction of becoming a Chartered Accountant. His success may appear extraordinary today, but nothing extraordinary is built overnight. He recently shared the ancient Sanskrit wisdom that has guided his philosophy: शनैः पन्थाः शनैः कन्था शनैः पर्वतमस्तकम् । शनैर्विद्या शनैर्वित्तं पञ्चैतानि शनैः शनैः ॥ A long journey is completed one step at a time. A quilt is woven one stitch at a time. A mountain is climbed one careful step at a time. Knowledge is acquired slowly. Wealth, too, is built gradually. We live in an age that celebrates speed. Today, I graduated with my master’s degree in International relations far away from my homeland. Today, I graduated with my master’s degree in International relations far away from my homeland. Forced to live far away from Afghanistan after its collapse, I faced the painful reality of displacement, uncertainty, and the struggle to rebuild and start everything from zero and scratch in a foreign land. Yet, through it all, my determination never wavered. This degree is more than an academic achievement; it is a symbol of my unwavering dedication to fighting for women’s rights and standing up for those whose voices have been silenced. The plight of Afghan women, deprived of their fundamental freedoms, fuels my resolve to be an advocate for justice, equality, and change.
