Currently, high school students can get AP credits in subjects like Biology, Calculus, and even Art classes. But for some reason, we don't elevate Shop Class to that same level — even though it's where you strengthen hands-on skills foundational to a career in the trades. Students should get dual enrollment credits in those classes, and I'm working to make that a reality.

The only thing I knew about Jason Altmire before I invited him onto the podcast was that he’d written a terrific book about the importance of reinvigorating the skilled trades, and that he was the current President and CEO of CECU, a national trade association representing private career schools and trade programs. I didn’t know he was a life-long Democrat who had served three terms in Congress. I didn’t know he lost his reelection because he voted against the Affordable Care Act, or that he had the most centrist voting record in the House when he got out of politics. All I knew was that he shared my interest in closing America’s skills gap by making a more persuasive case for the skilled trades. And now, we're friends. I have no idea what this guy might have accomplished had he survived his own primary, but he didn't, and the reason is clear - our current system is designed to smother even-handed, commonsensical, moderate voices who care about the country, on both sides of the aisle. To those of you who have urged me to enter politics, this is why I haven’t. To get the endorsement of your party, you have to fall in line. And I’m not a big fan of falling. Or lines, for that matter. And I guess, neither is Jason. Who else would object to the border fence between Mexico and the US, based on the fact that it was constructed of steel imported from China? Anyway, that’s all behind him. Like many of his predecessors, once upon a time, Jason did his time and then returned to the real world and got busy. Today, he’s focused on reimagining our workforce, and I’m super interested in what he’s already accomplished. What a fun, non-partisan, totally worthwhile conversation. A short clip is below. 📍 WARNER, OK - High School Students Learn How To Build A House From The Ground Up! A dozen students in a construction class at Warner High School have completed a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home, which is now for sale. The school district is accepting sealed bids for the home at 1003 E 5th Avenue in Warner, with a minimum bid of $210,000. The bids will be opened on May 15th. Teacher Ira Jackson returned to the classroom after retiring to teach the hands-on work. “The goal of the program is to produce students who can read a tape measure and understand the basics of carpentry and building, and move on from there,” he said. Several students already have job offers after working alongside licensed trades workers during construction. Ethan Atkerson, a Warner High School senior, said he helped with cabinetry, guttering and lighting, and is certain he’ll pursue a career in construction. “I’ve loved doing every part of this,: he said. “It’s all been enjoyable to me. I like being able to work with my hands, and this is something that I can work with my hands and look at the work and think, I did that, I’m proud of that.” Every high school in America should be doing this!

Oregon has one of the shortest school years in the nation. Just over the river in Vancouver, the average K-12 student receives one year more of instructional time than students in our state. A recent poll showed that 80% of Oregonians support requiring local school districts to provide at least the national average of school days. Your kids deserve a world-class education, and on Day One I will work to increase classroom time and give teachers the resources they need so that all Oregon students and teachers can be successful.

It is with deep regret that I inform you that the J&K government has rejected our Bill on Sheikh-ul-Alam University in today’s Assembly session. I moved the Bill in the Legislative Assembly with the goal of establishing the region’s first private university. The proposed Sheikh-ul-Alam University Bill for Pulwama (Bill No. 9 of 2025) was, however, turned down by the government. Despite my persistent appeals and efforts to have it considered, Education Minister and the J&K government rejected the proposal. In the decisive vote, NC MLAs opposed the Bill, halting what could have been a landmark step for higher education in Pulwama. Currently, J&K has no private universities, while India has over 500. Our students face immense challenges, including safety concerns and high costs of education. Over the past ten years, 500 cases of hate crimes against students have been reported. Many students spend more than 1 lakh per year, and around 2 lakh students from J&K are studying outside the Union Territory. We urgently need to build strong institutions here in J&K so that our students can access quality education locally, overcome crises, and pursue their ambitions without facing such challenges.

Since I assumed the position of Minister of Education, I have received numerous messages and letters from Part-time ND and HND students and those who have transitioned to full-time courses about their exemption from National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). As I told the students at Yaba Tech today, the Federal Ministry of Education and our agencies stand with you. The Presidency stands with you as well. You should not be exempted from participating in NYSC. I will be meeting with the Director-General of the NYSC in March to discuss this matter further. A solution is on the way.

Our education system is failing miserably Black American is asked to read this simple sentence The only words she can read is the word ‘funding’ and a couple more but can’t read or even pronounce most of the other words Here are the English proficiency score percentages according to national data Elementary School - White students: ~35–40% proficient - Black students: ~15–20% proficient Middle School - White students: ~30–35% proficient - Black students: ~12–18% proficient High School - White students: ~35–40% proficient - Black students: ~15–20% proficient Now obviously there is a gap here where white students are twice as likely to be proficient at reading compared to black students but that’s not the point The point is nobody passes on average. Even at 40% that’s less than half our kids finishing high school proficient at English This is horrible

Our kids need more time in the classroom, not less, yet Chicago parents are being asked for their kids to lose another day of school on May 1st for a political Day of Action. Parents and kids rely on schools for learning and consistency. Closing schools will send parents scrambling for babysitters or losing wages to stay home to care for their kids. For some kids, schools are where they get their meals and are the safest place they’ll be that day. As a CPS mom, I have skin in the game and expect my son to be in school where he belongs on May 1st. Keep Chicago’s students in the classroom, parents at work, and focus on the city’s test scores, not its politics. #chicago

I've been in touch with the District Collector on that issue. I've also written a letter to the minister. The conditions are appalling, and the district collectors had some temporary toilets installed. We are also discussing this because they are planning to relocate the girls. It should not be a place that is so far from their home that it becomes difficult for them to get an education, and slowly they drop out. We have also asked the minister to locate a place that is closer and to build this school and to repair the facilities in this existing school in the meantime so that they can move back close to their homes and finish their education. I have written to the minister, and I have also spoken to the District Collector and have requested that the most important thing is that they continue their education in a safe, secure, clean, and hygienic environment. Everybody is working towards it. : Congress General Secretary & Wayanad MP Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra ji on shifting the tribal students of a government school in Wayanad to a safe institution within the district.
