Through Central Military Intelligence, the trusted associate of one of "Mencho's" romantic partners was located and transported to Tapalpa, Jalisco. There, she met with "Mencho" 2. The romantic partner left the property, and intelligence indicated that "Mencho" remained in a cabin in Tapalpa, Jalisco 3. The operation was planned, and an operational force was organized, comprised of special forces from the Army and the National Guard, along with aircraft from the Mexican Air Force 4. Once "Mencho's" presence was confirmed, the operational force moved to apprehend him. Upon noticing the military personnel, they opened fire on the soldiers and National Guard members 5. Mencho left a group in the cabin area to halt the advance. The criminals attacked the personnel, so force was used, and the aggression was repelled in accordance with National Law. Use of Force 6. This is the beginning of the war against the most violent and deranged cartel in Mexico: El Cartel Jalisco Nuevo Generación. Or CJNG. Their leader “El Mencho” was killed today in a raid by Mexican Special Forces using US intelligence. These elite forces train with us regularly. Over the past year most of the attention has been on the Sinaloa cartel. This is a much needed refocusing on CJNG. Both are major traffickers of fentanyl, but CJNG is more like ISIS than the mafia. They are ruthlessly violent, currently terrorizing all parts of Mexico to intimidate the government back into submission. Congress needs to actually pay attention. I’ve authored a dozen pieces of legislation to support our military, intelligence, and law enforcement efforts in Mexico. It’s time for Committees to take them up. We finally have a solid partner in the Mexican Government to work with. We are finally focusing huge intelligence collection efforts on the cartels (due in large part to my amendment to FISA two years ago authorizing collection on the cartels). We are finally taking them on. It won’t be over soon. But it’s about time we started. 🧵

During Mexico's morning press briefing (mañanera), Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch provided an update on the violence triggered by the arrest attempt and subsequent death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho," leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He reported a total of 85 blockades nationwide in response to the operation, all of which have now been cleared and brought under control by authorities. Additionally, 70 individuals were detained in connection with the unrest. Authorities recorded 27 attacks on security forces, described as cowardly acts of aggression. Tragically, these resulted in the deaths of: 25 members of the National Guard 1 custodian/prison guard 1 member of the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office 1 civilian woman. A further 15 members of security forces were injured. On the criminal side, 34 hitmen (associated with the cartel) were neutralized/eliminated during the clashes and response operations. The secretary emphasized that order has been restored across the affected areas following coordinated efforts by federal and state forces.
