White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett says the U.S. is not in a hiring recession, despite the Bureau of Labor Statistics November jobs report showing unemployment ticked up to 4.6% and the pace of hiring slowed. “I think that, basically, the number was about what the market expected,” Hassett argues. “It was a number that was less than 100, which is a little bit lower than you'd like. But then, after that, we got the Consumer Price Index numbers, which were really amazing.”

Navarro: What you want to see is whether the ppi numbers moved to the cpi which is not always the case at all. We also know the ppi -- some people will try to make it a tariff story. If you look beneath the hood of the numbers, there is nothing in there to suggest that tariffs were responsible for a number that was above estimates. This is a case where you watch the data now and you watch it carefully. As the boss says, let's see what happens.

On the heels of a weak August jobs report that fell well short of economists’ expectations, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett is downplaying the jobs data, telling Margaret Brennan “the reason we are getting massive revisions and numbers that don't make sense is really that we have got to modernize the way we do the labor data.” Hassett goes on to add, “The thing I am most suspicious of in terms of data quality is the job number, in part, because there are other ways to do it.”

When Trump was on the campaign trail he was saying inflation was out of control, but you can see clearly we're in a worse spot now than we were last fall when inflation was maybe the biggest issue on the minds of voters.
