I’ve gotten to know him over the years, and I can tell you this: he’s serious about taking on the cartels. In 2020, El Mencho’s cartel tried to assassinate him in broad daylight. They failed. And instead of backing down, Omar doubled down. That tells you something about his character. This isn’t abstract policy for him. It’s personal. He has lived it, and he has survived it. Now we’re seeing deeper cooperation between the United States and Mexico than we’ve seen in a long time. An Igbo chief asked his Hausa security guard to bring his family from the north to live with him in the East. He gave them a bungalow in his compound with every amenities in it for free. He didn't stop there, he went ahead to train the 3 children of his security guard from primary to university level. After listening to this interview, i can authoritatively say that the Igbos don't hold grudges over any tribe, region or religion. It's just that some regions and individuals refused to heal and move on, 56 years after the civil war.

During Mexico's morning press briefing (mañanera), Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch provided an update on the violence triggered by the arrest attempt and subsequent death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho," leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He reported a total of 85 blockades nationwide in response to the operation, all of which have now been cleared and brought under control by authorities. Additionally, 70 individuals were detained in connection with the unrest. Authorities recorded 27 attacks on security forces, described as cowardly acts of aggression. Tragically, these resulted in the deaths of: 25 members of the National Guard 1 custodian/prison guard 1 member of the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office 1 civilian woman. A further 15 members of security forces were injured. On the criminal side, 34 hitmen (associated with the cartel) were neutralized/eliminated during the clashes and response operations. This is the beginning of the war against the most violent and deranged cartel in Mexico: El Cartel Jalisco Nuevo Generación. Or CJNG. Their leader “El Mencho” was killed today in a raid by Mexican Special Forces using US intelligence. These elite forces train with us regularly. Over the past year most of the attention has been on the Sinaloa cartel. This is a much needed refocusing on CJNG. Both are major traffickers of fentanyl, but CJNG is more like ISIS than the mafia. They are ruthlessly violent, currently terrorizing all parts of Mexico to intimidate the government back into submission. Congress needs to actually pay attention. I’ve authored a dozen pieces of legislation to support our military, intelligence, and law enforcement efforts in Mexico. It’s time for Committees to take them up. We finally have a solid partner in the Mexican Government to work with. We are finally focusing huge intelligence collection efforts on the cartels (due in large part to my amendment to FISA two years ago authorizing collection on the cartels). We are finally taking them on. It won’t be over soon. But it’s about time we started. 🧵
