M51 Skysweeper Radar-Guided Jet Killer of the Early Cold War wasn’t just another gun. It was the first anti-aircraft weapon to put a gun-laying radar, analog fire-control computer, and high-speed autoloader all on a single towed carriage. The goal? Fill the critical gap between older heavy AA guns and the still-immature surface-to-air missiles of the era. Developed starting in 1948 and entering service in the early 1950s, the Skysweeper was designed to handle fast, low-to-medium altitude jet threats that older systems struggled with. It could detect targets over 20 miles away and put a high volume of fire on them quickly—roughly double the sustained rate of many contemporary heavy AA guns. It saw service with the U.S. forces (including deployments for airbase and key-site defense) and was also used by Japan, Greece, and Turkey. But its time in the spotlight was relatively short. By the late 1950s, improving surface-to-air missiles (like Nike) began closing the range and reaction-time gaps the Skysweeper was meant to cover. Most U.S. units were phased out by the early 1970s, though some foreign operators kept them longer. The M51 remains a fascinating transitional weapon—one of the last pure gun systems designed to fight jets before missiles fully took over the medium-altitude role. M51 Skysweeper Radar-Guided Jet Killer of the Early Cold War wasn’t just another gun. It was the first anti-aircraft weapon to put a gun-laying radar, analog fire-control computer, and high-speed autoloader all on a single towed carriage. The goal? Fill the critical gap between older heavy AA guns and the still-immature surface-to-air missiles of the era. Developed starting in 1948 and entering service in the early 1950s, the Skysweeper was designed to handle fast, low-to-medium altitude jet threats that older systems struggled with. It could detect targets over 20 miles away and put a high volume of fire on them quickly—roughly double the sustained rate of many contemporary heavy AA guns. It saw service with the U.S. forces (including deployments for airbase and key-site defense) and was also used by Japan, Greece, and Turkey. But its time in the spotlight was relatively short. By the late 1950s, improving surface-to-air missiles (like Nike) began closing the range and reaction-time gaps the Skysweeper was meant to cover. Most U.S. units were phased out by the early 1970s, though some foreign operators kept them longer. The M51 remains a fascinating transitional weapon—one of the last pure gun systems designed to fight jets before missiles fully took over the medium-altitude role.
