No, this is NOT an acceptable work practice, at least in the United States. We have all kinds of safe wire nuts/crimping/mechanical parts and techniques to make a splice in wires safe. It is a good animation video... so there's that.

Some of these are things you should actively avoid, not aspire to. Wrapping one cable around another is a big no.

Actually, as an electrician by trade I think that using the pen or something small for insulating when there's little room is a great idea and I'm gonna do it next time in certain situations!

Did you know? The first electrical wiring in homes was made of bare copper, which was nailed or stapled directly to the wood framing of the building. It wasn't until the 1920s that cloth-covered wiring was introduced, which was much safer and more durable than previous wiring.
