Elliott Smith Miss Misery Oscars 1998

Got to see him live at the Troubadour back in the day. People would shout out obscure requests in between songs off the GWH soundtrack (”Needle in the Hay!!!!) And i said “Free Bird”at a quiet moment. He laughed. Looked up at me and said “Free Bird”.

Fuck. Well done dude. RIP Elliott … “Son of a bitch, he stole my line”.

So good. So missed

Surreal that this really happened. ❤

Growing up in Portland it was surreal to see our hometown genius, unwashed hair and quiet voice, sharing the big stage with Celine Dion’s melodramatic Titanic song. Elliott was always the antihero we needed.

Can’t imagine what it must have been like for him to bare his soul in front of all the Hollywood glitterati only to lose out to “My Heart Will Go On” for Best Original Song.

I gained a huge amount of respect for Celine Dion when I heard about how much she supported and encouraged Elliott when he was freaking out back stage ahead of this performance. She knew that wasn’t his scene so she just took the time.
