Elon about Terafab: “We’re not going to do just conventional compute, I think there’s some very interesting new physics” Very interesting! NVIDIA style chips are just one way of doing AI compute. Is Elon talking about analog AI? Neuromorphic chips? I hope it’s something very ambitious. I think we’re... show more

Oh, and you can bet that xAI’s Grok will be at the forefront of helping develop that new physics and devices.

When the person building the factory says the physics itself is going to be different the most rational response is not skepticism but the kind of quiet attention you give to someone who has earned the right to make extraordinary claims.

We don't get warp drive from the current system. Period. This IS the point of ASI. To push physics. I'm sorry, but humans don't have the capacity to comprehend beyond a certain point. AI is going to have to compress otherwise unfathomable concepts to our level, or we're going to have to merge with AI to understand anything at all beyond tribalism, echochamber ideology, pre-abundance, wealth accumulation and the desire for power over others. This can't come fast enough. Thankfully, the curve isn't linear. Thank you Mr. Musk, et al. Let's get out of this disaster we call current intelligence.

Analog is appealing for some operations, but: •detrimental for others. •susceptible to noise, thus less miniaturizable. •draws more power. Neuromorphic seems less agile. Maybe when models last longer? Photonic is good for transmission & analog. But less miniaturizable. E-beam etching might be next in the future. But a tall order. Spintronic & petahertz require future precision.

Spintronics is already being used in MRAM. Could have a lot of potential there.

@BrianRoemmele @beffjezos Do you think he will try your ideas for analog and thermal chips?

It’s going to be an invention, meaning no one has done it before.

If they're intending to run 2 fabs (inside the Terafab) one for terrestrial and the other for space; and the end goal is to do a design loop to build and iterate on chips and masks quickly. Its possible to make context specific chips in batches. With work optimized designs.

it's rather esoteric but elon is a noted probabilistic thinker, so the 'probability is high' elon was referring to the below. if so, it is indeed "wild and crazy": Beff – e/acc - Dyson swarm of thermodynamic computers is the endgame. Elon Musk: “We're not just going to do conventional compute in this (TeraFab). I think there's some very interesting new physics that actually I'm confident will work. It's just a question of when. So we're really going to push the limit of physics in compute and we're going to try a bunch of wild and crazy things which you can do if you've got that fast iteration loop. I can't emphasize enough the importance of being able to make a chip, test it, and then improve the design, do another one, and have that in a single building. I think that our recursive improvement with that situation would be probably an order of magnitude better than anything else in the world.”

🥴😏 Think more in terms of light and lasers I believe 😎

Everyone has their pet technology they want to see developed 😀 We shall have to wait and see what comes out of this new age "Edison Laboratory"

It will happen eventually too many benefits not to with the direction things are going. Less shielding and interference from stray capacitance as well as magnetic forces. Not to mention data transfer speed.

@grok what new physics could Elon be talking about in semi chip production?

Recursive Loop for ultra fast chip development

Is it Dojo? Excuse my ignorance

In Elon's presentation, they showed a chip called D3 as the space based chip, so presumably that's an evolution of the Dojo chip? So Dojo's going to space I guess. But the advanced chip physics Elon was talking about could presumably apply to both terrestrial inference and space based compute.

Novel AI compute architectures are compelling, yet Canada lacks the terafabs to participate. We import breakthroughs while engineers update passports.

Insert Don Draper’s 'That’s what the money is for' speech. Call me when it works in a 40°C container yard.

@thejefflutz Jeff, with the Terafab announcement, do you think Elon is unambiguously signalling to existing chip manufacturers that if they don't ramp their own production as quickly as they possibly can, they are guaranteed to be limiting their future unit sales?
