Elon at Davos: "SpaceX, within a few years, will be launching solar-powered AI satellites." Last week, early SpaceX engineer Scott Nolan explained the logic behind Elon's solar AI vision: "Solar obviously takes a lot more area on the ground, but there is plenty of area for that in general.... The missing piece was really storage." "Solar is inherently cyclical. To smooth it out, you need very cheap grid-scale or at least gigawatt-scale storage. Batteries or other forms. We haven't had that yet at a cost point that I think can compete with nuclear. That could change, and that would be great. But for now, in the foreseeable future on Earth, it's nuclear." "Now, when we talk about in-orbit, it's a whole different ballgame. If you have very cheap launch capacity, if your GPUs don't weigh very much, which they don't, and they're high-value, you could potentially put all of that in orbit, have your solar panel completely in sun-sync, and solve the battery issue. If you look at the cost of solar power five years ago, 10 years ago, or 20 years ago, it would have seemed cost-prohibitive. But the cost of solar power today is extremely low. The cost of batteries to store that energy has also dropped dramatically. Battery storage costs have fallen by a factor of 10 in the past five years. So many of the studies that were done were done in times past, when batteries were very expensive and solar power was very expensive. I would just encourage everyone to take another look at the cost of solar and the cost of batteries. I think you’ll find that you’re pleasantly surprised. Elon Musk

That is somewhat a confluence of Tesla expertise, SpaceX expertise, and xAI on the AI front. So, it does feel like, over time, there’s somewhat of a convergence there. ELON MUSK: The Future of AI Power is in Space, Not on Earth. "Once you start thinking in terms of what percentage of the sun's power are you harnessing? You realize you have to go to space and you can't scale very much on Earth. All of the United States currently uses only half a terawatt per hour on average. So you know, if you say a terawatt, that would be twice as much electricity as the United States currently consumes. So that's quite a lot. It's actually very difficult to build power plants and then you don't just need the power plants, you need all of the electrical equipment. Need the electrical transformers to run the transformers. You can build power plants. That's what we did at xAI for Colossus 2. It's very difficult to scale other forms of power. You can scale potentially solar. Solar cells are already very cheap. Now put it in space and it's 10 times cheaper because you don't need any batteries. So the moment your cost of access to space becomes low. By far, the cheapest and most scalable way to generate tokens is space. It's not even close. It'll be an order of magnitude easier to scale five years from now. My prediction is we will launch and be operating every year more AI in space than the cumulative total on Earth."
