Most of the time, you won't know it because platforms like OpenSea serve you a cached version. I have worked for a month on a wallet scanner that generates a storage security audit, explaining the risk for each NFT and showing which have already failed. I've already run it for a few respected collectors and am working on a version available to all. I will adapt it so you can run it on an NFT before you buy and own it. Hopefully, this encourages artists and minting platforms to prioritize the most reliable storage.
