NFTs promise to be eternal, inscribed on the blockchain. However, opposite to what most collectors and artists think, it's rarely the case. The metadata and media can be stored in different ways, from the most solid to the weakest: onchain, Arweave, IPFS, web. When it becomes inaccessible, the NFT is broken. Most of the time, you won't know it because platforms like OpenSea serve you a cached version. I have worked for a month on a wallet scanner that generates a storage security audit, explaining the risk for each NFT and showing which have already failed. I've already run it for a few respected collectors and am working on a version available to all. I will adapt it so you can run it on an NFT before you buy and own it. Hopefully, this encourages artists and minting platforms to prioritize the most reliable storage.
