ELON MUSK: Nobody believed SpaceX could land rockets, until it did. “We really had no idea at the start of SpaceX how to actually make rockets. And obviously, we blew up a rocket three times before finally reaching orbit. It took many attempts from a very talented and dedicated team. And now, we’ve gotten to the point where we take off and land and recover a booster every few days. When we were trying to land the booster, no one really believed that we could succeed. And I was told by so many experts in the aerospace industry that you’re not going to succeed in doing this. And even if you do, no one’s going to buy a rocket that was, you know, a used rocket, essentially. And yeah, it’s amazing to think that we’ve got our 700th flight coming up. So, just a huge testament to the incredible work of the Falcon team and the launch team, manufacturing team.”

With SpaceX and reusable rockets, there really weren’t any reusable rockets, but the essence of revolutionizing space travel is reusability. It's very similar to an airplane. How much does it cost to fuel up an airplane, and how much does it cost to buy an airplane? They're very different things. If humanity is ever to expand beyond Earth and establish a self-sustaining base on another planet, it's critical that we solve this problem. Whether it's SpaceX or someone else, someone has to solve the problem, and we can have a hundred-fold reduction in the cost of spaceflight. That's what SpaceX has been trying to do, and really that's been the goal since the beginning of the company. So far, I've not been very successful in that regard, but I think we have a handle on it. It’s — it’s been crazier, to be honest with you, because the hundreds of millions of people back here in the United States, like, we felt the support. Whether you liked hockey or not, it united everybody and cheered for one team. Peter Thiel on the most important lesson he learned building PayPal The early employees of PayPal went on to build incredible companies like Tesla, SpaceX, LinkedIn, YouTube, Palantir, Yelp, Yammer, and more. When asked about the factors that explain these outlier successes, Thiel suggests that it was probably a combination of several different things: an entrepreneurial culture, lots of strong personalities, and the early 2000s was a great time to start a company. But Thiel also says that the overarching lesson you learned working at PayPal—which had a lot of challenges but ended up succeeding—was: “You can build a great company, but it’s hard.” He contrasts this to the lessons you learn at most startups: “If you’re at a startup that fails, you will learn the lesson that it’s impossible to build a great company and that you should try something less ambitious the next time around. If you’re at a startup where things work too easily [such as Microsoft or Google], you learn the lesson that it’s actually easy to build a great company.” He continues: “Hard is somehow better than easy or impossible.
