Christopher Nolan is one of the world’s best Directors. His films are sensational and everyone couldn’t wait for the Odyssey. But now…it’s engulfed in criticism before people have even seen it. Controversy surrounds it. Why? Because of the casting. Helen of Troy is one of histories most iconic figures. Blonde, blue eyed, the most beautiful woman in the world, the face that launched a thousands ships. Definitely not a black woman of African heritage. The truth is it’s a fictional story, in reality anyone can play these roles. But when the very story itself partly revolves around the identity and looks of a character, changing it to the exact opposite was bound to cause trouble. And that is not the only character. Casting diminutive trans actor Elliot Page as a heroic Greek warrior? Really? Nolan sees to have sacrificed reality in an attempt to comply with the Academies bullshit “diversity quotas” in films purely to win Oscar’s, and in many people’s eyes that fatally damages the film and compromises his reputation.

Christopher Nolan: "Going to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago when I was 16 years old, seeing a documentary about volcanoes in the OmniMax format, and thinking... why on earth isn't Hollywood using this format? I always wanted to be a director. If I ever got the chance, could I shoot a film in this way?" Christopher Nolan’s next film is only 63 days away but the doubters are out in full force- you can hear them from miles away. I’d like to offer an olive branch to those questioning Nolan in this moment: there’s still time for you to reverse course & stop doubting Nolan. I’m truly surprised by how many have suggested that The Odyssey could be a full-blown failure. The “bust potential” conversations around this film are growing, albeit needlessly. Many have criticized Nolan’s casting decisions & creative decisions- without even seeing the film. This is all without mentioning that Nolan just won multiple Oscars- he just gave us an immediate classic with Oppenheimer. Doesn’t that mean he gets the benefit of the doubt? Shouldn’t people hold their reservations until they see Nolan’s vision through? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Let this be a line of demarcation. 63 days out from The Odyssey, if you’re one of those folks doubting/questioning Nolan, this might be one of your last chance to be on the right side of history when Nolan drops another classic.

Let me explain why the disapproval is the rational part of this story, and why the confidence of the people waving it away is not. The defence for casting Nyong’o as Helen of Troy is shallow. “These are made-up stories,” says the online commenter. “They can be remade however we want.” The people making this argument believe that distinguishing myth from history is a display of intelligence. A clean example of the Dunning-Kruger effect, the confidence of someone who has learned that a thing is invented without ever asking what the invention is for. History records one man, once. Myth records what a thousand men held in common. The myth is the self-portrait a civilization paints of its own best self. This is why it is not merely a tale for entertainment. Homer’s Odyssey is a time capsule for a culture, the encoded values and examples that tell a people what it means to belong to them.

Awesome interview by a Chinese doctoral student who tears apart ignorant Mr Nolan in a most polite way. I have 3 main observations: 1. The Light of Hellenic civilization - from Homer to Socrates and from Alexander to Byzantium - has been carried across the world. A Chinese student represents the Greeks FAR BETTER than their current prime minister (who paid Nolan and congratulated him for the clout he brought this would get him) 2. Mr Nolan has NO CLUE about what he’s talking about, mumbling about Christianity, Xenia, Atonement, War, Sea Peoples and other concepts he has no understanding of and never cared to learn about. Joker and Batman were the most he could do (and the end of the trilogy SUCKED too) 3. Nolan shall be forgotten in the next 10-20 years. Homer is remembered still, after Millennia. One talked about a civilization on the rise, through blood and fire and the other one tried telling us as story about his inherent phobias and a civilization crumbling. Notice the difference? Kudos to the people who posted and reposted this interview along with the original interviewer!

And Chris turns to me and says, “Lupita, will you direct the… give the background actors their tasks?” And I just thought, “Wait, have I ever done this before? I’m acting in this and now I have to direct other people? Isn’t there someone else who’s supposed to do this?” Jimmy Fallon: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wait, wait. “Am I directing as well?” Lupita Nyong’o: What? And then I said, “Oh my God, I’m the queen. I guess I would be the one to tell them what to do.” Jimmy Fallon: That’s good! Controversy has erupted over Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming film adaptation of Homer’s poem The Odyssey, which arrives in the wake of a contested 2017 translation by Emily Wilson, a classics professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Critics of Wilson’s translation argue that she has rewritten Odysseus from a hero into a morally suspect figure. Nolan cast a black actress, Lupita Nyong’o, to play the Mediterranean woman Helen of Troy, prompting criticisms of hypocrisy and racism from Elon Musk and others. It is inconceivable that Hollywood would today use a white actor to play a black character, and yet the media applauds when white characters are played by black actors. Isabella Reinhardt, an assistant professor of classics at the University of Austin, and my colleague, disagrees with some of Wilson’s choices. For example, Wilson translates polytropos, which Homer uses to describe Odysseus, as a “complicated man,” where Robert Fagles, in his 1996 translation, renders it as a “man of twists and turns.” The choice is representative of Wilson’s depiction of Odysseus as something other than heroic. Reinhardt, who recorded a podcast with me last week, received her PhD in the same Penn classics department where Wilson teaches. “I do think Odysseus is not a perfect hero,” says Reinhardt, “but he is the hero. It is inconceivable that Hollywood would today use a white actor to play a black character, and yet the media applauds when white characters are played by black actors. Isabella Reinhardt, an assistant professor of classics at the University of Austin, and my colleague, disagrees with some of Wilson’s choices. For example, Wilson translates polytropos, which Homer uses to describe Odysseus, as a “complicated man,” where Robert Fagles, in his 1996 translation, renders it as a “man of twists and turns.” The choice is representative of Wilson’s depiction of Odysseus as something other than heroic. Reinhardt, who recorded a podcast with me last week, received her PhD in the same Penn classics department where Wilson teaches. “I do think Odysseus is not a perfect hero,” says Reinhardt, “but he is the hero.
