Elon Musk said humanity is currently using less than a trillionth of the sun's power output. A trillion is a million times a million. That is how far we have to go. He was explaining the Kardashev Scale on a SpaceX livestream. A Russian physicist named Nikolai Kardashev invented it in 1964 as the most objective way to measure how advanced a civilization actually is. Not by population. Not by GDP. By energy. Type 1: you harness everything your planet produces. Type 2: you harness your star. Type 3: you harness your galaxy. Where does humanity sit right now? We are not Type 1. We are not close to Type 1. We are a tiny fraction of the way to Type 1. Musk said if aliens visited us today and measured us on this scale, we would not be registering. This is the next big plan for SpaceX: AI Data Centers in Space. • To achieve even a small fraction of a Kardashev Type II civilization (harnessing the full energy of the Sun), AI compute will require orders of magnitude more energy than Earth can ever provide. • Earth only intercepts about 1–2 billionths of the Sun’s total energy output. • Massive-scale AI (e.g., a million times more energy than Earth could produce) can only be powered by capturing far more solar energy in space. • Space-based solar-powered AI satellites/compute clusters are therefore inevitable. • In space, sunlight is continuous (no night, no clouds, no atmosphere), so no batteries are needed. • Solar panels in space can be extremely lightweight and cheap (no glass, no storm-proof framing required). • Cooling in space is dramatically easier and simpler: just radiate heat directly into the cold vacuum — no water, no fans, no liquids, no massive cooling infrastructure. • Most of the mass/volume of current supercomputer racks (e.g., GB300) is cooling hardware; in space that largely disappears. • The cost-effectiveness of electricity and compute in space will soon be overwhelmingly better than on Earth. • Elon’s Prediction: within ~5 years (by ~2030), the lowest-cost way to run large-scale AI will be solar-powered satellites in space. • A terawatt/year of AI compute is essentially impossible on Earth with any realistic build-out of power plants. • Scaling both power generation and cooling on Earth at the required rate is physically and politically unfeasible.

No life. Not a worse version of Earth. A dead rock drifting through nothing. That is the default state of this planet without a single energy source. Everything else is commentary. The sun is not one option on a menu of power generation. It is the only reason biology exists here at all. Musk: “Because of the sun, we are at a quite a nice temperature, quite pleasant. Sort of roughly 300 degrees above absolute zero.” A 297-degree window between civilization and extinction. Every ecosystem, every economy, every human body operates inside that margin. The entire project of life fits between those numbers. And somehow the species looked at the source of all of it and decided it was a secondary energy option. The compute demands of the next decade alone will require energy production at a scale fossil fuels physically cannot reach. The intelligence explosion does not run on oil. It runs on electricity.
