Elon Musk makes it clear that he doesn't spend much time thinking about competitors. Rather than worrying about what others are doing, he wants to create something as close to perfect as possible. Musk believes that kind of focus naturally leads to a compelling product.

Elon Musk: Even if you're not absolutely certain about something, you can try to get as close to the truth as possible while acknowledging that there will be some error in what you're saying. Aspiring to the truth is very important.

Elon Musk just exposed the most common trap in business strategy. Most founders are obsessed with market share. Musk doesn’t know his competitors exist. Musk: “I don’t really think about competitors. I just think about making the product as perfect as possible.” The moment you benchmark your execution against a rival, you’ve capped your ceiling at their level of mediocrity. You’re no longer setting the pace. You’re reacting to someone else’s. Interviewer: “You don’t think about competitors at all?” Musk: “No. I just think about making what we want to achieve, the Platonic ideal of the perfect product.” You don’t engineer a multi-trillion-dollar monopoly by iterating on existing features. You do it by relentlessly pursuing the absolute theoretical limit of what the product can be. The average founder is trying to build something slightly better than the alternative. Musk is trying to manifest the mathematical ceiling of the concept itself. When your only benchmark is the Platonic ideal, the competitive landscape becomes completely irrelevant. You’re no longer competing. You’re just executing the purest possible form of the architecture. Musk: “As long as you focus on that, you will have a compelling product, obviously.” Dominance is never the goal. It’s the unavoidable byproduct of building something so structurally sound that alternatives stop making sense. Every hour spent calculating competitive positioning is an hour stolen from perfecting the product itself. The most dangerous builders on the board don’t strategize how to defeat their rivals. They engineer a product so fundamentally superior that rivals quietly become irrelevant. The market doesn’t reward the best competitor. It consolidates around whoever stopped competing and started perfecting.

Behar complains about "getting flack" about accusing Musk of being "pro-apartheid" as a child and begs Elon Musk not to sue her for defamation: "I don't really know for sure if he was. He grew up in that time when [it] was in full blown...He was around at that time. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't...don't be suing me, okay, Elon?" She then whines about having to tell the truth.

As Wisconsin voters head to the polls today, remember that Elon Musk spent more on this race than any other billionaire. Every accusation he makes is a confession. He wants to buy the Supreme Court.

ELON: FOCUS ON WHAT YOU ARE PERSONALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT! “You want to focus on something that you are personally passionate about, that you personally care about. It's very hard to be motivated for a product that you don't really feel strongly about. It doesn't have to be high-tech. It could be in any field. It's got to be a product that you feel really needs to be there and something that you personally love." Source: Viva Technology, Paris, June 2023

Elon Musk Elon Musk on how to manage companies better: “Spend less time on finance, spend less time in conference rooms, less time on PowerPoint, and more time just trying to make your product as amazing as possible. I think there might be too many MBAs running companies. There's the MBA-saition of America, which I think is maybe not that great. There should be more focus on the product, the service itself, less time on board meetings, less time on financials.”
