Elon Musk on Optimus: "Everything in the Optimus robot is designed from Physics First Principles. Its not taken from a catalog. These are custom designed. Everything, literally everything. Optimus is designed to have a lot of intelligence and to have the same electromechanical dexterity, if not higher than a... show more

ELON: OPTIMUS GEN 3 COULD HIT A MILLION UNITS A YEAR "I think Optimus three is the right version of the robot to produce maybe something on the order of like a million a year. I think you'd wanna go to Optimus four before you went to 10 million units a year. Everything in the robot is designed for physics first principles... literally everything." ELON MUSK: "We’ll probably unveil Optimus Gen 3 in a few months. I think it’s going to be quite surprising to people it’s an incredibly capable robot We are replacing the SX line in Fremont with a million-unit-per-year line for Optimus Because it is a completely new supply chain, there’s really nothing from existing supply chains that exists in Optimus; everything is designed from physics first principles The normal S-curve of manufacturing ramp will be longer for Optimus than it is for products that have at least some portion of an existing supply chain The production rate will be proportionate to the least lucky, least confident part of the entire supply chain Optimus 3 will be a general-purpose robot that can learn by observing human behavior. You can demonstrate a task, verbally describe it, or show it a video, and it will be able to perform that task. It’s going to be a very capable robot."

Elon explained Optimus is built tall at 5'11" with human level (or better) dexterity and real intelligence, so it can carry heavy stuff for long hours without overheating or dying on power. It'll cost more at first, but once Optimus robots start building more Optimus robots, the price will drop fast. Source: Achieve Success

Elon Musk: "There are really only three hard things for humanoid robots: the real-world intelligence, the hand, and scale manufacturing. And I haven't seen any even demo robots that have a great hand, But Optimus does have that. We had to design custom actuators, basically custom-designed motors, gears, power electronics, controls, sensors—everything had to be designed from physics first principles. There is no supply chain for this.”

Elon Musk revealed the 3 hardest challenges for humanoid robots and how Tesla is solving them There are really only three hard things for humanoid robots: - Real-world intelligence - The hand and - Scale manufacturing "I haven’t seen any demo robots that have a great hand with all the degrees of freedom of a human hand. But Optimus does have that" To reach human-level dexterity, Tesla had to design custom actuators, motors, gears, power electronics, controls, and sensors, everything from physics first principles There is no supply chain for this "From an electromechanical standpoint, the hand is more difficult than everything else combined. The human hand turns out to be quite something" This is why Optimus is on a completely different level. Tesla is solving the hardest problems from the ground up

🚨ELON MUSK: "With Neuralink devices, you should be able to have full body control and sensors from an Optimus robot. You could basically inhabit an Optimus robot. It's not just the hand, but the whole thing. So you could mentally remote into an Optimus robot."

ELON MUSK: "Optimus will be the biggest product ever, but it is a very complex problem to solve. It's one of the hardest things to solve, to make an autonomous humanoid robot that can do tasks that, if you simply ask it to do something or show it a video, it can do the task without any programming. No one's ever achieved this, and there are many challenges in the design of the robot to achieve sufficient dexterity and to be very reliable and have long wear and tear, meaning it needs to be out in the field and not break down. Otherwise, you've got sort of a 70 kilogram robot that just flopped over and you've got to carry it out like a body, you know, it doesn't have wheels. And we don't want Optimus to go haywire. So it's a lot of work to scale, to get the design right and to scale production. This is going to be the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we've ever made at Tesla because everything on the robot is new. And the difficulty of scaling the production ramp is proportionate to the newness of the parts in the robot. With Optimus, there is no supply chain. So we've had to build up a supply chain in its entirety or in-house the production. The Optimus production line that we're building out in Fremont in place of what used to be the Model S & X production, it looks incredible. It's quite stunning to see."

Elon Musk: “Optimus Will Be The Biggest Product Ever Created” Let's see Optimus. You know, as you've heard me say before, I think Optimus will be the biggest product ever. But it is a very complex problem to solve. It's one of the hardest things to solve. To make a humanoid robot that can do tasks that you simply ask it to do, or show it a video, and it can do the task without any programming — like, no one's ever achieved this. And there are many challenges in the electromechanical design of the robot, to achieve sufficient dexterity and reliable hands, to be very reliable and have long, long wear and tear. But, I mean, it's good to be out in the field and not break down. Otherwise, you get this 70-kilogram robot that just flopped over, and you could carry it around like a baby, you know. And we don't want Optimus to go haywire. So, it's a lot of work to scale, to get the design right, and to scale production. And I really want to emphasize here that the production scaling challenge is very, very substantial. So this is going to be the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we've ever made at Tesla, because everything on the robot is new. And the difficulty of scaling the production up is proportionate to the newness of the parts in the robot.

Elon Musk says people with Neuralink brain chips will eventually "be able to have full-body control and sensors from a Tesla Optimus robot, so you could basically inhabit an Optimus robot. Not just the hand, the whole thing. You could mentally remote into an Optimus robot. The future is gonna be weird, but pretty cool."

Elon Musk: You might be able to download a snapshot of your mind to an Optimus robot within 20 years. Question from the audience: “Do you see a path for Optimus to have human consciousness downloaded to it?” Elon: “It's not immediate, but if you say, down the road, would you be able to, say, with a Neuralink, have a snapshot of what is an approximate snapshot of somebody's mind and then upload that approximate snapshot to an Optimus body? I think that at some point that technology becomes possible, and it's probably less than 20 years. Of course you won't quite be the same; you'll be a little different because you'll be in a robot body, and the mental snapshot will not be precise. It'll probably be pretty close, but not exactly the same. On the other hand, are you the same person that you were five years ago? Nope. I mean a lot of things have changed, so. Yeah. But I guess at some point if you want to be uploaded to a robot body, my guess is that becomes possible.” Tesla Shareholder Meeting, November 6, 2025

Elon Musk: In the future, you'll be able to inhabit an Optimus robot. “As we advance the Neuralink devices, you should be able to actually have full body control and sensors from an Optimus robot. So, you could basically inhabit an Optimus robot. Not just the hand, the whole thing. So you could basically mentally remote into an Optimus robot and it'll be kind of cool. The future is going to be weird, but pretty cool.” Neuralink presentation, June 27, 2025

Elon Musk in new interview on how Tesla’s Optimus robot will learn more quickly: "What we're going to need to do is build a lot of robots and put them in a kind of like a "Optimus Academy" so they can do self-play in reality. We're actually building that out. We're gonna have at least 10,000 Optimus robots, maybe 20,000 or 30,000, that are doing self-play and testing different tasks. Tesla has quite a good reality generator. A physics-accurate reality generator that we made for the cars. We'll do the same things for the robots, and actually have done that for the robots. You can do millions of simulated robots in a simulated world, and you use the tens of thousands in the real world to close the simulation to reality gap.”
