Roads are a constraint from a human-driven era. When vehicles become fully autonomous, networked, and probabilistic, you don’t need painted lanes.. you need coordination. Roads exist because humans are unpredictable. AI traffic doesn’t drift, panic, text, or rage. The future isn’t “better roads.” It’s fields of motion, dynamic vectors, software-defined right-of-way. Once vehicles negotiate space the way packets negotiate the internet, asphalt becomes optional. Airbags updating OTA is just the first hint. The real upgrade is: infrastructure moves from concrete to code. That’s the trajectory @elonmusk is quietly pointing toward.

My Tesla makes me put on my seatbelt even if I’m only driving 10 feet in a parking garage to free up a charger. No self parking unless it’s on.

This is preparation for a fully autonomous future where we sleep, work, and relax in the car, ideally without seatbelts. Maybe we can start with just a waist belt. Autonomous cars will be so safe that we may not even need belts or airbags, and the structure of the car itself will change because crashes will almost never happen.

Seatbelts are still good for keeping you seated in heavy braking or cornering that is short of a catastrophic crash. Airbags must be replaced after each use.

Applaud Tesla leveling up air bag design. However, if I was in a high speed wreck, especially one where the car went airborne for a moment, would still 100% want to be wearing a seat belt. I have seen wreck videos of people literally being ejected through the windshield. Tremendous momentum transfer in a car wreck.

Airbags or not, my wife will not want, nor need, a 200lbs+ projectile slamming into her head at highway speeds because I did not put on my seatbelt. She also does not want to become the projectile. People get thrown from cars even with airbags. Nobody wants that.

When we are in meetings, we use a tool for what we call "dotting." It allows everyone to convey what they are seeing and how each person is behaving in real time. You can look at a screen and see, in color, how people are seeing each other. You see who thinks something is the most arrogant thing, or the stupidest thing, or that you aren't being considerate. When you see that visualization in real time, you are forced to ask yourself: How do I know that I’m seeing it the right way? How do I know that I’m not the wrong one? You realize you are just one of those dots in that line and in that grid. It causes you to go above yourself and provides perspective. Once you see how everyone else is seeing the situation, it raises a fundamental question: Together, how do we know what’s best? Just because an idea is in your head doesn’t mean it’s best. To make the right decisions, we have to look past our own individual assumptions and work together to find the truth.
