Here’s Elon Musk explaining that SpaceX could launch up to one terawatt per year of AI compute capacity into Earth orbit — equivalent to the power output of roughly 1,000 nuclear power plants. “The next step beyond Earth data centers is our Earth orbital data centers. And we'll be launching with SpaceX orbital data centers at the 100-to-200-gigawatt-per-year level. Not cumulative, per year. And ultimately, we see a path to maybe launching as much as a terawatt per year of compute from Earth. But what if you want to go beyond a mere terawatt per year? In order to do that, you have to go to the Moon. So by having factories on the Moon, building AI satellites, and having a mass driver, which is the kind of thing you really only learn about in or read about in science fiction, but we're going to make it real. We're actually going to have a mass driver on the Moon. And if you do that, you can go several orders of magnitude greater. You can go to 1,000 gigawatts or more per year and ultimately get to maybe a millionth and then a thousandth and maybe even a few percent of the Sun's energy.” xAI All-Hands, February 10, 2026

Elon: To understand the universe, we have to explore it. Earth is a dust mote. The Sun holds 99.8% of the solar system’s mass. Orbital data centers are next. 100–200 gigawatts per year. Moon factories. Mass drivers. AI satellites into deep space. This is how consciousness scales. From dust mote to stars. Elon Musk

Elon Musk on 𝕏 Spaces tonight: "The biggest opportunity on the moon is to make solar cells and radiators, and then, you're manufacturing on the moon anything that weighs a lot, chips maybe still come from Earth, they weigh very little. And then you can use a mass driver to put a billion tons of AI powered satellites into orbit per year. You could set a scale to 100 terawatts of AI compute per year from the moon. We already have 9000 satellites in orbit. So we know what it's like being in space."

Elon Musk laid out the most ambitious compute expansion in human history and it ends with harnessing the Sun "We'll be launching with SpaceX orbital data centers at the 100 to 200 gigawatt per year level. Not cumulative; I mean per year" And this is just step one, the next step is Scale further from Earth to launch a full terawatt per year of AI compute into orbit It gets even crazier from here When even a terawatt isn't enough....Go to the Moon. Build factories. Build AI satellites Deploy a mass driver - the thing you only read about in sci-fi novels and push output to thousands of gigawatts per year and ultimately get to maybe a millionth and then a thousandth and maybe even a few percent of the sun's energy "It's difficult to imagine what an intelligence of that scale would think about but it's going to be incredibly exciting"

Elon Musk on scaling AI beyond Earth. "To reach a terawatt of compute per year, we need about 10 million tons to orbit annually. This is feasible—no new physics required—and I'm confident SpaceX can achieve it." Most people treat orbital mass as sci-fi. Elon treats it as a logistics problem with hard numbers — and a factory plan to match. • ~10 million tons to orbit per year • Terawatt of solar for power • Terawatt of compute → Terafab fills the gap No new physics. Starship is the freighter. Terafab is the factory. "We're also scaling to a terawatt of solar for power. The remaining piece is a terawatt of compute, which is why we're building Terafab."

ELON MUSK: "I do see a path to 100 gigawatts a year of AI powered space solar satellites. If you do a million tons of payload to orbit per year with 100 kilowatts per ton, that's 100 gigawatts of solar powered AI satellites per year. There's a path to get to a terawatt per year, then you want to make those AI satellites on the moon and use a mass driver. We should scale solar substantially in the US. Tesla and SpaceX are scaling solar, and I encourage others to do so as well."

ELON MUSK: Kardashev-Scale civilization will need Moon Bases and Mass Drivers. To reach a Kardashev-scale future for AI, humanity need space-based infrastructure including Moon bases, mass drivers, and large-scale solar power systems. Future AI may require energy at a scale far beyond what Earth can easily support. Solar-powered AI satellites launched from Earth could potentially generate terawatt-level power, but would require around 10 million tons of payload to orbit every year. That level of infrastructure could produce around twice the annual electricity use of the United States for AI power. The idea is not limited by physics; the real challenge is building at a massive enough scale. Lunar infrastructure could unlock petawatt-scale solar-powered AI, making Earth’s current economy look small by comparison.

ELON MUSK: The only way to reach 1,000 terawatts of AI power is a mass driver on the Moon. "In order to get to 1,000x from a terawatt per year. The only way that we can really achieve that is on the moon with a mass driver, essentially where you do local production of photovoltaics and radiators on the moon, maybe you bring the chips from Earth, or you could conceivably make the chips on the moon, and but you need most of the mass to be made on the moon, so you don't have to transport it to the moon from Earth, and then because the moon has no atmosphere and only 1/6 Earth's gravity, you can accelerate the AI satellites into deep space without a rocket, so you can basically shoot them into space using an electromagnetic gun, like a, like a rail gun type. I mean, just, it's basically a linear electric motor, as a way to think about it."

"The only way to reach 1,000 terawatts of AI power is with a mass driver on the Moon. Most of the hardware would need to be produced locally on the Moon, and because it has no atmosphere and only one-sixth of Earth's gravity, AI satellites could be launched into deep space using an electromagnetic mass driver instead of rockets." — Elon Musk

NEWS: SpaceX has detailed Starmind, its plan for up to 1 million AI compute satellites in orbit, on a new website. Starmind moves AI data centers into space. Each satellite runs AI compute in orbit and beams results to Earth through Starlink lasers. The satellites draw constant solar power and cool for free in the vacuum. SpaceX filed that plan with the FCC in January. The first satellite, AI1, carries 150 kW of peak compute and spans 70 meters. Starship will carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch. SpaceX will build them at a new Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. The AI chips come from a planned SpaceX and Tesla fab called Terafab. Two prototypes target early 2027, with thousands of satellites from late 2027.

🇺🇸 Elon confirms the “Terafab” model links xAI, SpaceX, and Tesla to scale chips, energy, and factories together, aiming for terawatt-level compute output. The idea is to control the full stack: chip design, manufacturing, power generation, and deployment, with most compute eventually supporting space-based systems. So it’s like a feedback loop, more factories build more chips, which train better AI, which then designs even better factories. Because why build a factory… when you can try to build the entire stack. Source: Elon Musk Tesla

Elon Musk on why the Moon might come before Mars: “You don’t necessarily have to go through the Moon to get to Mars. But I think we can build a self-growing city on the Moon faster than we can on Mars” The Moon has major advantages for scaling AI in space: Because it has no atmosphere and only one-sixth of Earth’s gravity, you can use a mass driver (railgun) to literally shoot AI data centers into deep space - no rockets required You can also manufacture solar panels and radiators directly from Moon materials. This could allow scaling to over 1,000 terawatts per year of AI compute - compared to roughly 1 terawatt per year if launching everything from Earth Mars remains the ultimate goal - a whole planet with Earth-like gravity and a thin atmosphere that could one day be warmed up to have oceans and walkable surfaces without spacesuits But the Moon could be the faster stepping stone to build massive infrastructure in space

The Sun is essentially all the energy" "If you wanted to harness a millionth of the sun's energy, that would be about 100,000x more electricity than we currently generate on Earth for all of civilization" "The only way to scale is to go to space with solar. Launching from Earth, you can get to about a terawatt per year" "Beyond that, you want to launch from the moon. $Bro… Elon just laid out the blueprint on how xAI and SpaceX are getting to 1,000+ gigawatts per year and beyond, in his closing statement at the xAI all-hands! IMO, this is why there will be no competition in space. 1/ Earth Supercomputers (Now) Build Memphis cluster to get us to >1 GW of power. “We’re only right now using roughly one percent of the potential energy of Earth.” Plan: • 330,000+ Grace Blackwell GPUs • ~1M H100-equivalent compute • 1 gigawatt draw at full scale • Built in <1 year • Tesla Megapacks stabilizing energy FYI, most AI companies are operating in hundreds of megawatts, yet xAI is already at a utility-scale gigawatt compute. 2/ Orbital Datacenters (Soon) Get to 100-200 GW per year launched into orbit with a path to ~1 terawatt (1,000 GW) total from Earth launches. “The next step beyond Earth data centers is our Earth orbital datacenters… launching at the 100-200 gigawatt per year level. Not cumulative, I mean per year.” Benefits: • Continuous solar exposure • No land constraints • No terrestrial grid bottlenecks • Virtually unlimited horizontal expansion FYI, 100–200 GW per year is equivalent to adding multiple large nation-scale grids annually. 3/ Moon Factories + Mass Driver (Mid Future) Get to 1,000+ GW per year, several orders of magnitude beyond Earth. “In order to do that you have to go to the Moon… We are actually going to have a mass driver on the Moon.” Plan: • Lunar factories build AI satellites • Electromagnetic mass driver launches them without fuel • Low lunar gravity reduces launch energy requirements • Scales far beyond Earth’s physical constraints FYI, this is when industrialized compute begins manufacturing off Earth. 4/ Solar System & Beyond (Long Term Future) Today the sun outputs ~3.8 × 10²⁶ watts “If we wanted to use even a millionth of the Sun’s energy, that would be roughly a million times more energy than civilization currently uses.” This means • 0.000001 of the Sun’s output = ~1,000,000 × today’s global Earth energy usage. 🤯 “Earth is really a tiny, tiny dust mote in a vast darkness… The Sun is 99.8% of all mass in the solar system.” To access that scale: • Moon manufacturing • Mars expansion • Solar-orbit compute clusters • Eventually tapping meaningful fractions of stellar output So… the blueprint to get here is 1/ Start at 1 GW. 2/ Scale to 1 TW. 3/ Scale to 1,000+ GW per year. 4/ Then expand toward fractions of the Sun itself.
